Default help with accord

im currently in the market to buy a honda. my plan is to buy something that needs a little mechanical work. i found a 1991 accord lx in my local classifieds says that it needs some work to get it running and wont stay running. i just wanted some advice on what could possibly be wrong and what to look for when i go to check out the car.

I got an idea, give the classified to me!-I'll take it! lol, anyway If its a good deal i would say go for it. I own '91 accord LX and i love it. My car just had its 220,000 mile birthday today, and its going strong despite my driving style and modifications.

As far as it not running its most likely something REALLY simple that the owner just doesnt know about. All 90-93 accords have a problem with the PGM-FI main relay. Usually when its hot outside, or after driving for a while, the car will not want to restart after being shut off, but will drive fine when the engine is on. The part costs about $80, but it should work fine after that. I have heard of alot of people selling otherwise very good cars because of this problem simply because they dont know its an easy fix.

If thats not the problem (in other words if it starts fine, but just runs like crap all the time), i would buy it and drain the old gas (if its been parked for a long time) and refill with known good gas, replace the air filter, change the oil, replace the plugs and wires, and check the timing. Most likely that will fix any remaining problems and you should have yourself a great reliable high mileage car for a very long time to come. The worst that could happen is that your will lose around a 100 bucks on tune up parts.

When you go back to look at the car, just look around to see if any maitenance has been done in a while, check the mileage... if its REALLY high 300K+ then that may be a bit excessive, overall just check the upkeep of the car and that should give you a good idea on how much you will need to put into the car for it to be reliable again. If it looks like it needs alot of work, then it probably will : ) - Good luck
