Default 1992 PRELUDE SI WONT START

ok i was driving the car and it was running fine and it just bogged on me a little bit and just died completly it ended up getting towed. the next day i pushed it from the towing place to a nearby parking lot and i figured it was the fuel pump because i couldnt hear i priming when i turned the ignition on so i replaced it right there in the parking lot....nothin so my next thought was main relay so i went to napa and bought one and installed it and again nothing. the motor will crank but there are no signs of it trying to start and i just recently found out that in not getting spark from the plug wires. im completly lost now and i have no idea wats going on if any of you have any ideas let me know.

Mine just died on me with a No-spark issue. Mine is swapped to a JDM H22A so it was a little more confusing about what part went back, but I guessed and think I got it right.

I am going to assume that you have the similar wire/engine setup as my 1993 H23 wiring harness, but let me know what motor you have. If your wires are not at I describe below then ignore my suggestions. I just don't have time to search for SI-possible-engines right now.

NOTE : ?? = if I remember correctly.....

Anyways, if yours is stock it will be simpler for you to diagnose. If you are absolutely sure about your motor not sparking, then check for voltage (key on) on the Black/yellow (??) to your external coil. I used the blue wire on that connection as my ground signal and I found about 11volts (key is on). Then I checked the Yellow (??) wire on the same connection using blue again as ground...I found about the same voltage there. This Yellow (??)wire and blue wire go to the distributor, so I ASSUMED that all my ground and voltages were good.

Therefore, I replaced the distributor with my stock H23 external coil and distributor setup. Since my JDM distributor had an INTERNAL coil in the distributor, technically I replaced my coil AND distributor at the same time....so I can't recommend which part to replace unless you can further test them to narrow it down. Ask around and find out if you can use a screwdriver to test the main coil wire from the ignitor coil arcing it to ground. In my little theory, if it arcs then the coil would be good????????? leaving the gremlin to be the distributor????

BEWARE, I am always scared when I work on my own cars cuz I know verrrryyy little besides "theory", "trial & error", and "check for voltage & ground"....so get some opinions from others ALSO!!!!!

Before the car completely died...did it ever stutter or misfire randomly? If so, it sounds like you need a new coil. Try calling around to a few auto part stores to see who can test your coil for you, unless you know how to do it yourself using a multimeter.

As for the fuel pump...does the fuel pump and CEL turn on for their 2 second cycle when the key is turned to the ON position? Mine didn't, and it turned out to be a mix of bad solder joints on the main relay AND the thermostat housing ground was not connected. I re-flowed the solder at those joints, attached that ground...car runs like a top now.

I would look into the ignitor. Quite a few people have suffered from the no spark problem and that was the culprit.

I had a similar problem a few months ago. Mine ended up being the #18 10 amp fuse in the fuse panel inside the car. It says it is an acc. fuse on the cover but once I replaced it the car cranked right up. No problems since.

I don't know if this will help any, but back when I had an '89. I had a similar problem. For about a day or two the car would randomly stall out and after cranking over a few times would start. Then finally one day it stalled and wouldn't restart. After the local garge guy telling me the belt must have jumped and would need loads of work, I towed the car home & started doing research on the web. Some guy on another site suggested that I check inside the Distributor cap. Apparently some of the cheaper replacements are notorious for the screw falling out of the rotor and then it just spins on the shaft. Believe it or not that's what it turned out to be. The garage guy never even pulled the cap off and was already to tear into the motor and head. Saved $$$$$$

"also when i turn the ignition on the check engine light does not come on like on all other hondas i have tried "

I also noticed that with my bad JDM distributor (internal coil). with key on, the check engine light would light up initially then go out and stay out. If I tried to pull codes the light would come on and stay on permanently. I'm thinking that was weird, but not for sure....
