Default Couple Questions Before Freshening Up?!

alright so i have the * * jdm * * 97 spec R motor.....loving the motor from day one.....although ive been through a good bit with the car lol (long story)
on to the good stuff:::::::

i am wanting to "freshen" the motor up, the motor has around 74k on it (bought from jhot with about 67k). i am probably going to redo the head with arp studs definately but unsure with the rest. i will most likely be going with all motor also.

one question is, are the later ITR cams better/more aggressive than the 97 and if so is it a big difference.
and if i do decide to get, i guess around 2000-2001 cams, what aftermarket valvesprings, retainers, etc....can i go with if any?

i am wanting to freshen it up with a couple extras but dont want the car down too long, because i do not have the funds for the *good stuff*.....(bigger cams)

i have a hard time explaining things but hopefully somebody will help out.....

thanks

i guess i should put i have an ARC intake (just the pipe) w/ an apexi filter (both came with the motor) and i have a 98- spec jdm 4-1 header with 2.5" piping with tanabe g medallion *i think thats the name*(looks like WS)

The cams out of a newer itr motor are a lil more aggressive, but switching to those wont require the use of upgraded valvetrain. However if you are set on it, you can use portflow inner valve springs with the stock type r outers, those will be good for up to 11.5mm of lift or you can buy skunk2, supertech, omni, etc. As far as arp goes, I love their rod bolts, but I dont use them for anything else in an all motor application. The stock stuff is more than adequate for most all motor setups but to each is own. Good luck.

yea i am wanting to get an upgraded valvetrain even though i know that stock will be good as well....and with the arp head studs i am doing it just to be on the safe side and they aren't too expensive either....

what about any advice for the exhaust set up...should i stick with 2.5" piping or go with 2.25"

also thinking about going with a valve job (not sure which one yet) and port and polish.....

so all advice is welcomed for freshening the head/bottem end up

I would not touch the bottom end right now. As for the head, do not even bother switching to the 98+ cams, the power is going to be similar to the cams already on your car.
