Default Please help...have a serious problem with alternator I believe.

I have a 98 DX with B16A. Last night I was driving on the highway and hit a small bump. It was nothing out of the ordinary. About a minute later my speedometer started to flick and then I heard something make a light popping sound. My check engine light came on immediately and my speedometer and odometer stopped working at that point. A few minutes later my tach(in the guage cluster) died and my guage cluster dimmed, my radio cut off and then everything else went dim. A few minutes later, as I was looking for the next exit my car went dark and about 30 seconds later just died out on me.

At first I thought I may have knocked a battery terminal loose or so and figured that my car was draining what charge was left on the battery. A friend of mine was driving behind me luckily so he stopped off also. He gave me a jump and the car started fine and a minute or so after we unhooked the jumper cables the car died. After I jumped the car I drove it a few feet to see if everything worked but the speedometer still didn't work.

This was all at about 11:00 pm and nothing was open but a local Parks Auto Parts but they were closing. One of the guys told me it might be a main relay or something that went bad or maybe my speedometer cable is loose. I have no idea as I've never run into this problem before. Please help, it would be greatly appreciated.

take it to a parts house that does the free check of the charging system. could be main relay, bad battery, or alt.

Thanks, I was thinking that but I'm going to have to get it towed again.

The fuse in the ELD/fusebox that powers the alternator field coils also powers the cluster/speedo. I think your ELD took a dirt nap, or the alternator crapped out and took the ELD with it.

Thanks all for your input. I fixed it this morning. I found out that my speed sensor wire shook loose and was resting on my header, causing the speed sensor/alternator fuse to blow.
