Default Distributor problem

So lately I was hearing this sqealing from under the hood coming from the distributor side. Popped the hood and sure enough it is kind of like scraping sounds inside the distributor cap. I took off the distributor cap to see red dust and shavings inside the distributor. I used electric contact cleaner to clean as much of the red dust from the cap and rotor. The cap and rotor is about 2 years old and have only about 18,000 kms on them.

After doing a search, I concluded that it seems to be the distributor bearing. The only thing is that I grabbed the rotor and tried to wiggle it left-right, and up-down and there is no play in it. If I twist clockwise-counterclockwise then there is a tiny bit of play but isn't that normal ? I was thinking that the bearings might be a problem if there was play when moving the rotor left-right, or up-down? Am I off base? But of course something is definitely wrong with the distributor. It is still the original distributor and the 90crx si has about 216,000km on it.

After clearning all the shavings, and the red dust off, I ran the engine and the squeal and scraping noise was still happening from the distributor so I shut her down.

For the distributor, how important is it to get oem?

Thanks for your help, folks.

Replace the distributer, its gonna take a **** on u. The shaft is gonna break and leave u stranded. If u have the cash to by o.e.m than go ahead and buy it. But re-mans are not so bad. They usually come with a life time warranty. good luck. Just to let u know, it happened to me, my car left me stranded at a drive in...hahaha

There is not necessarly going to be play if the bearing is bad.

Yeah, thanks guys. I just bought a new aftermarket distributor. Just have to wait till UPS drops it off and then will swap it. I ended up getting one made from Rich Porter Technologies. I hope it works out.

After swapping distributors, I might try to rebuild the old one. I don't mind tinkering with it.

On a side note. I am pretty happy with the original distributor as it lasted me 18 years and 216,000 km. I love my car!!!

Ok, it was pretty easy replacing the distributor. I only annoyance was figuring out to how to unclip those 2 electrical Honda plugs. LOLOL. Other than that, I just made sure to oil the o-ring on the new distributor, mark the position of the distributor for the ignition timing, clean out the area that the new distributor would mate with the head, make sure that the orientation of the 2 "tabs" were aligned properly and not 180 degrees off, and bolted it up. Torqued the 3 hold down bolts to 16 lbs-feet, and plugged the 2 electrical plugs in, reconnected the ignition wires. Fired her up and she's running great. Shorted the ignition timing adjusting connector, checked the ignition timing with a timing gun, and it was spot on. Hahahaha. I guess marking the position of the old distributor paid off.

Wow, the bearings on the old dizzy was fubared, because I could not turn it by hand. I am glad you guys recommened that I just replace the dizzy. Thanks gang.

For 88-91 the proper fitment for MPFI is Si dizzy the 90-91 Integra LS dizzy has to be slighly modified by cutting 1 arm off and just using 1 mounting bolt to hold it down in place. For proper timing use 88-91 Si

Actually, I am RMA'ing the 90/91 integra that they had sent me. Since the RMA process was going to take way too long and I need my car running, I went to a local car parts shop and bought the proper one. It cost a bit more but they had one in stock and it was a Beck-Arnley distributor. Interesting thing is that it has the stamp markings of the RichPorter Technology distributor and both were made in Taiwan. I am betting that they both came from the same manufacturing plant and that Beck-Arnley is just rebadging the Richporter Technology distributor. The pictures of the proper RichPorter Technology distributor even looks exactly like that of the Beck-Arnley dizzy.

So for those buying a new aftermarket oem fit distributor for the 90crx, si, just get the cheaper of the 2 as I suspect they are the exact same one.

Salute
