91 octane and rising gas prices.
With gas prices higher then ever, average of $4.70 for 91 here in the bay area have any of you switched to 87? I still fill up with 91 but I've read countless surveys stating the difference between 87-89 is minimal. I know the advantages to how it's necessary considering our compression ratio.
So my question to you guys as gas continues to rise, have any of you tried running 87? I know it's ridiculous considering how much most of us pay for premium oil but geez these gas prices are getting outrageous.

exactly, if you have a 10 gallon tank and, 87 octane is .20 cents more a gallon, that's $2.

my friends always gave me crap about this very issue. but then again, at the time, i had an accord LX... automatic. seriously, why put in premium when it called for regular? on the other hand, with the R, i would probably suggest sticking with premium just to be on the safe side.
if you were strapped for cash, i would say you could just put regular in... you'll definitely pay for it in terms of performance... and maybe even through worse mileage so i think it'll just be a wash. i noticed this in my wife's mdx and with her constant carping about it, the $5 bucks saved just wasn't worth it to me
for the last 5k miles on my gsr before i rebuilt the bottom end, i put in regular and it ran fine.
on our cars, the ECU will adjust the timing due to lower grade gas. if you were to go with regular, i just wouldn't go into vtec territory.

True I guess I didn't see it as just $2 I'm thinking of the long haul and yearly expenses. $2 dollars now yes but when I fill up 4-5 times a month it add's up.

Exactly. OP pays insurance on an ITR in the Bay area, CA.....an extra ~$3 or even $5 a tank is nothing
Not worth it to cheap out on this....

My insurance is cheap! $55 a month for full coverage!
Thanks guys it's really my Dad who keeps throwing the jabs in about having to pay for premium, it's that Engineer in him.

My TL-S is a company car with a gas card and we have an "87 octane only" policy now. It requires premium but I have been running 87 for a while now (last 6 or 7 tanks) without any problems. The car sees rev-limiter daily too. Sometimes going up hill in 6th gear I can hear slight knocking, but it did that even with 93 octane.

That's what it should be if you don't drive like an idiot IMO.
An interesting fact is that an '03 M3 costs a meager $6 more for a 29 year old with a clean record than the exact same coverage on a 97 ITR. Wow.
Anyway, with the gas, you need to sharpen your pencil if you think that running 87 to save $3 is equitable.

Your car will waste even more gas on 87 octane and you will have to pump more often then usual and pay more eventually... its like $5 max difference between 87 and 91 octane on a full tank.. stop being cheap.

dont beat the **** out of your car if you run 87 octane.
but if you want to run 87 to save money you might as well get a civic vx(50mpg) cx(45ish mpg) or a ek hx(low 40 mpg) all on 87 octane
cheap on insurance
and less people foolin with your car
those are about averages on mpg you will get if you drive in the gas saving mindset,

Yup. You'll get slightly lower mileage in an ITR with regular than with premium. And with the difference between regular and premium now below 5 percent of the price of gas, all you need is a difference of 1 mpg and you're spending MORE on gas, per mile, with regular than with premium. And you'll get lower performance with regular, too. So there is ZERO benefit to using regular. Stick with premium, on the ITR (and other cars for which premium is recommended).

If you want to safely run 87 or e85 for that matter your going to need to retune your ecu. Its just going to dump more gas in, which I feel would equal out to the extra cost of premium.
