Default bad or good mechanic? how much to get rotors fixed?

i went to an autoshop to get my driver side rear breakpads replaced (i bought a new set at NAPA autoparts). the autoshop quoted $80 for labor plus $20 for resurfacing. i thought this was expensive so i tell them i'll be back later. the guy said he'd take $20 off. still thinking $80 total was expensive but i thought id get this over with. so i went for it. after 45 minutes later i came back from hanging out at kfc to see the mechanic drive off with my car (to test the breaks?) and come back 15 minutes later. after i paid them, they informed me my front rotor needs to be fixed. i thanked them and drove off thinking what a nice fellow. the breaks are good now, no squeeking. but now driving at 75 miles and up the car shakes. wth!? it never did that before! i wonder if they did anything to my rotors on purpose. what do you guys think? i will probably not come back there anymore.

so, now i need rotors fixed. how much is that going to cost me? i also need to replace my tires. if i do this at places like Cosco or Firestone, do they do the rotors for free before replacing the tires if i bought their tires?

Dude, brakes are very simple to do. New rotors are cheap, too. You can have them re-surfaced at any auto parts store or just get some new ones.

Don't pay people money to put in brake pads for you..... That was one of the main reasons I started working on cars was so I wouldn't get ripped off any more or let anyone break my car.

x 7903802082304 gagillion.

I don't know how, but mechanics can *** up a brake job LOL.

Jack your front end up. Give each tire a spin (free wheel'n) Watch for wobble. Than grab your tire one by one and rock them side to side and up and down. Watch for free play. The tires should spin freely and linearly, and should not have any side to side or up to down play in it. Repeat this for procedure for rear tires. Report back your findings. Make sure car is jacked and held with support stands as well as having the opposite side tires blocked off so it can't roll. The rear tires you'll need to have parking brake off. So Block your front tires securly and put it in 1st gear. When doing fronts, block back tires off, and use ebrake.

Hopefully, they just put one of your tires off center a bit or something. YOU should take it back and demand to speak to manager. Tell the manage you know for a fact something went wrong and they HAVE TO FIX IT. Don't waver. MAKE them fix it. If they refuse, take them to court, and file a complaint to BBB. Don't panzy out either. Lots of people just back down and let these *** heads win. But than they think they can do it to everybody, and next thing you know, they are trying this sh*t with every tom dick and harry. It could be the rotors not being balanced maybe? Or they could be out of shape. You'd have to get a micrometer or similar tool and measure the width all the way around the rotor's they resurfaced. Gay either way. Just take it back bottom line. Don't be a coward! And don't wait, or they will use this time as an excuse for you causing the problem yourself.

Good luck man!!! don't back down. Be polite, but be assertive!

maybe that was a typo but you never just replace one side. Also its a better to spend your time learning how to fix your own car rather then have a grease monkey do it. Trust me I was a tech for 13 years but it burned my back out. Reguarding your shaking why driving take it back and drive with the machanic. Maybe the guy didnt tightened the tire all the way lol

take the rotor off yourself and have it turned. oreillys charges 8 bucks a rotor. just for pricing my gf just took her car into the dealer to do all 4 break job and they charged 80 in labor to remove and turn the rotors

I just had the brakes done on one of my trucks. They did vibrate a whole bunch at first but subsided in the end.

Your missing the whole point of DIY. Its the self empowerment you get by learning.

I started DIY for similar reason Like HawkZ said. And now I am my own Auto modding Consutant. I also work on a fleet of Diesel Trucks as well. Thats all because I didnt like listening to mechanics Bull **** me on crap they Effed up or just knew I knew nothing about cars.

I have 1 mechinc place that I go to when Im in need of help. I might go there once a year, and thats because they have a DYNO and better toolss than me.

What ever you choose to do GL.

I wont work on most DIY cars now, most of em are too [freak]ed up too often. not saying all mechanics are good, but most non mechanics are worse.
brakes though are pretty damn easy, on my wifes lude i changed the rear rotors and pads in about 30 minutes last tine i had to do em.

Not really worth resurfacing rotors. That place might charge 8 bucks per rotor to resurface, but if this guy needs to pay for them to take it off and install them, I'm sure it turns more into 20 dollars per rotor. New OE rotors that suffice a DD from autozone, advance auto with lifetime warranty cost around $25 a rotor...

That's how it is around here (W-B, Pa.) too. Ya can't drive your stuff into the local chain repair shop and have them work on it because any mods and the guy working on it is lost. Their computers don't have the details on how to repair it unless it sits as it came from the factory. DIY is the only way to go!

when you replace rotors you have to scrape off rust on the hub or that extra thousands of an inch will cause vibration when braking

Default vibration

Now you say vibration at 75mph+, now is this only when your foot is on the gas or cruising, or is this happening when braking??

accel/crusing after a job like this= Most likely lug nuts arent fully flush and are loose, so when at higher speeds theirs more rotation stress that would cause the wheel to shake and vibrate if not fully tightened. Now a 15min test drive seems alittle accesive after doing brakes, so whether or not they messed up something(hit a pot hole, did burn outs) whatever the case who knows. Check your tire wear, loose lugs, and check balancing(outside shop would have to do this due to having to use a machine).

Now vibration while braking at high speeds= They didnt resurface the rotors, or ive even seen cases where cheap aftermarket pads mixed with oem rotors cause really fun vibration at high speeds when braking due to the different soft and hard materials.

Now the price they charged isnt entirely horrible. But brakes are usually pretty simple if u ever wanna save yourself money and feel like you accompished something yourself get someone to teach you or read up on how to do them.

To the OP the price you were quoted is actually pretty decent. Stop being so cheap when it comes to your car. Also you see were cheap got you. Now you have more problems then when you first came in..

Been doing it my self for about 8 years with no back problems what-so-ever and many techs I know(including instructors) have over 20 years exp. with no back problems. My guess is you were lifting **** the wrong way or something.Other than the occasional truck tire theres not a lot of heavy lifting involved. In fact I have never heard of an auto tech get back problems from normal work...

rotors cost me $10/rotor....did all the other work myself tho. doesnt really take that long in my opinion. took me an hour and a half to get all that done, but then again the shop took an hour to get my rotors resurfaced. about the shaking/vibrations....does it sound rhythmic? like a flat? i had a problem similar to that, but mine turned out to be the wheel bearing. which cost me about $300 at Honda.

As someone else stated, I just bought Autozone rotors for dirt cheap with warranty. My hub has a little play, causing one of the rotors to wear on the outside (pretty bad). I took both front rotors in and swapped them for brand new ones.
