Default 1992 Honda Accord LX

Hi
I have a 92 accord. It has a strange intermittent problem. Sometimes there is a click under the glove compartment or under the dash and the d4 light comes on, when it does 40 mph is my top speed and getting it from 0 to 20 is pulling teeth as they say, then it can click any time after that and it's "normal"
Took it to a transmission guy about three months ago he stuck a paper clip under the glove compartment and all of a sudden it seemed ok. He says he does not know what he did or what was wrong. Now it's coming back
I went to gig yesterday and was driving 40 mph all highway I could not get it to shift all the way to tampa, I had no choice was running late and had to perform with quartet, then after the wedding, got in the car and its seemed normal
Is there something I can do myself or do I have to take it somewhere and get raped??

At the top/behind of the passenger side kick panel, you can find a BLUE 2 pin connector.
jumper that connector and turn on the key;
The D4 light will then flash a code.
Long blinks=10s
Short blinks=1s
When you have the code the diagnostic process can begin
