suggestions appreciated for this turbo gsr build...
alright guys so i have finally have a chassis i want to build and its a 94 integra gsr. i will list my goals and planned parts and please add to or inform me with any help/experience you might have. this is not my first turbo car but will be my first built engine. it has quite a bit of miles on it so a freshening up is needed anyway
the car will be daily driven, retain ac, and probably ps. i would like the car to run 11's which i think would take around 450whp in a full weight integra. with that being said i would like the high boost setting to put the car around 500whp. on the other hand though, i dont want the car to spool later than 4k so if 500 isnt doable i will sacrifice there for a quicker spooling set-up. i have not decided a redline yet either but around 9k seems what a lot of people do with set-ups in that number area.
bottom end plans
- sleeved gsr shortblock (unsure which ones?)
- wiseco pistons (unsure of bore diameter?)
- eagle rods
- stock crank
- oem or acl bearings (suggestions here?)
- new oem oil pump, water pump, timing belt, and tensioner
the head
- planning on using the stock ported gsr head
- blox intake manifold paired with hondata gasket
- upgraded valve train (suggestions as to what brand please)
- most likely gsr cams but ctrs if i can find some and have the money
- stock ignition and all that junk, just new wires/dizzy cap/rotor
- 2.5 bar map sensor (i already have this but will get a 3 bar if i have to)
- valve cover will be tapped and a catch can will be used
- arp headstuds and cometic or oem gasket depending on how big i go with the cylinders
tranny
right now the car currently has a b16 transmission but i would like to get a gsr with probably a re-shimmed obx lsd. no matter what tranny i use it will have an lsd though
- competion clutch ( not sure as to what stage/power level) some bite is expected but i dont want to kill my leg/foot daily driving if possible.
turbo setup
- i want to use the spa log topmount style mani since i think i can make a 3 inch downpipe work and still run ac with no clearance issues. (mishimoto half rad will be used)
- full 3 inch exhaust will be used but i want to run a high flow 3 inch cat , a big *** resonator, and a magnaflow or vibrant muffler. (quiet while cruising is key for me)
- manifold will be modified and a 44mm tial wastegate will be used (open dumped)
- tial bov (still unsure of spring size)
- 2.5 inch cold side/2 or 2.25 inch hotside ic piping.
- precision 650 intercooler core
- 850 or 1000cc injectors
- walbro 255hp pump (hopefully this will suffice?)(if not the dual walbro intank set-up is kinda cool)
- turbo xs dual stage boost controller
i am not sure about the engine management but maybe crome pro or hondata?
i am sure i missed some things but this is just the idea i have in my head so any help is greatly appreciated. thanks
edit: forgot to mention a have no idea regarding the right sized turbo for this motor so throw some ideas at me please

Alright man, where to start... My brother and I are building a GSR motor and here is what we are doing. We are looking for a healthy 500-600whp motor.
Golden Eagle sleeved and assembled 83mm block. Arias pistons/eagle rods/stock crank. New OEM ITR oil/water pumps etc.
Stock head and intake manny for a while, 72mm throttle body, new valvtrain, 2 -12 vented lines out of valve cover. GM 3 bar map. ARP headstuds.
Tranny: GSR tranny w/lsd, and a competition twindisk/flywheel. (get the twindisk, perfect for what you want) hit up "boostfed" for a good price.
Our turbo setup:
-Garrett GT35R
-TiAL 44mm wastegate open dump
-TiAL 50mm BOV
-Fluidyne halfsize with FAL slim fan
-precision 1000cc's
-3" downpipe (Open)
-Sumped tank with external single pump. You could try the twin walbro setup as a single might not be enough.
-Hondata S300 w/solenoid
the garrett GT series turbo's are excellent, but I might be a bit biased! A 30-35R would be a good fit. Someone should chime in about the borg warners that people have seen such good numbers out of lately.
Good luck and prepare to spend a lot of money!

It's ok to be a bit biased, so don't feel bad. As for other choices, the Silver Surfer, and Borg-Warner S258 turbos can do a fantastc job. For something in the range of even more power, look to the S362, they are in the same housing as th S258

ok great thanks for the input. yea i know its going to be very costly so i can understand why you are keeping the stock head and intake mani. i plan to never port the head unless i can reach my goals stock. once i sell my 2 old cars, i should have around 7-8k to get me going. does anyone think that the SPA manifold may be a bad choice? i know the inline pro logs can make a lot of power so i figure this one is not a whole lot different, has good wastegate placement, and will help with the 3in DP/Ac issues since the dp will be on the pass side. as for the turbo, we just put a GT35R on my friends sti and i like it a lot but i have never ridden in a honda with one. what turbo is around the same size that i could start out with (initially saving some money) and then upgrade to the gt series later on down the road? thanks
sleeving, I would go with benson or golden eagle, I have delt with both with great success, I would also bore to 84mm, use cp pistons.
omni power makes some very good valvetrain components
yes gt35r's are nice, but its all a budget thing.
acl bearings are good, and so are oem, that one is all a choice thing.
Also I would look into Neptune or Hondata for engine management. Yes I know there are the cheaper ones out there, and people have done great with them, they are just not my cup of tea.

alright cool. i saw in your sig supporting blundar so i take it you are in the cincy area maybe?
not sure if you saw tpr had some pretty good deals on sleeved blocks so i may get it from them. 84mm would make it like a 1.9l right? no problems with that.
about the gt35r, as you said its all a budget thing and even if i have the money left for it, i kinda want to save where i can incase something goes wrong in the end.
by neptune do you mean rtp? i thought the regular neptune was fairly cheap? i was thinking about having slomotion tune the car so i was going to ask them what they tune but i would imagine they can work with the majority of programs out there
thanks

I just tuned with a BW T3 s362ett on a stock b18 w/ about 9.4:1 c/r. On a very very conservative tune (12:1 a/f and 14.5 degrees of timing at 12psi) the turbo made 350whp & 240wtq on 12psi. The turbo starts making more then atmospheric pressure at 2300rpm and has a full 12psi by 5300rpm...and let me tell you, the whistling from the Borg is so addicting.

Excellent. An example of the S362 in action, as I mentioned earlier, not to mention completely rebuildable if something goes wrong, unlike the GT35R. Sounds like a damn jet fighter, doesn't it?

Jet fighter is a perfect description...haha. I would reccomend this turbo just for the whistle
. For real though its a kick *** turbo and is just starting to wake up.

how much do these turbos sell for? is there a smaller similar unit that would allow quicker spool time?
also does anyone think i would have issues trying to use a 38mm wg? i plan to get a 44mm just figured i'd ask
thanks

alright guys well i bought a precision 750 intercooler last night from the marketplace and i ordered the half rad, head studs, timing belt kit, blox manifold, and some little stuff. i figure i had to order something to keep me motivated but from this point out i think ill focus on just getting the motor done

Well the s362ett sells for about 1200 i believe. Not sure how much hp your looking for, but to start spooling in the low 2000s and having a full 12 psi by a hair over 5000 is pretty impressive for a turbo that flows 68 lbs/min and is capable of almost 700whp. But to answer your question, you would wanna check out the s258.

ya im like 2 hrs north of cincy, also look at having blundar tune your car, he is right in your area and he is well respected in the tuning community and has helped make honda tuning software where it is today in my opinion.
yea i may do that, saw him tuning on the dyno at tpr the other day.
well for an update i ordered a few things, none of much significance but i need to sell one of my other cars before i build the motor. i ordered the blox manifold, mishimoto half rad, some magnetic tranny/oil plugs. got a precision 750 intercooler core, spoolin performance 2.5 inch intercooler piping, and couplers and clamps. also got a vacuum manifold, some ngk plug wires, a hondata intake mani gasket, and im thinkin about gettin the new tial q bov which my piping is already flanged for. we just put one on my friends sti but it doesnt run yet so im waiting on how it sounds

also i held off on the timing belt kit and headstuds since im still not fully decided on using the gsr block. i can get an erl sleeved b16 for 900 so i was considering just buying that and boring it out. what do you guys think about this idea?
The one thing that you don't want is to reach full pressure TOO soon, especially being a FWD application. The S362 is the complete answer against the SC61, so it does reach FULL pressure to about 2.0PR by about 4400rpms, but that's not bad at all. At the power levels that you're trying to achieve, you definately don't want it to move that soon.
This is where the silver surfer comes in. This allows for A/C and powersteering. I'll send you some information regarding the surfer in a PM..

thanks i pmed you back. so the sc61 would be a bad choice? it definitely seems to be oversized for my goals but used ones are selling fairly cheap in the marketplace.
bringing this thread back from death. due to money issues and moving to college, the build has come to a halt. I now have a storage unit and hope to get this stuff moving once again. i have gotten the spa topmount, precision 1000's, a 3inch dp, and a 3 inch catback. I have an 86mm b20 which i will be sending out to golden eagle to be re-sleeved and o-ringed.
i have chosen to go with the silver surfer (gt3255e) hybrid turbo from the shodan once i have the money. also going to use a tial 44mm gate. for the head i want to use the skunk2 stage 1 tuner series cams and for a clutch i am planning on the comp stage 5
what bore do you guys recommend for the motor? the purpose remains the same as i was saying before: street car/daily driven, needs to be able to handle a beating.

and my means of transportation while the car is down

the bay is definitely not pretty, but i did install the blox manifold and hasport mounts when i was bored one day. Im considering trying to find another dc shell that is cheap (completely gutted) and rust free, or maybe even an eg hatch.
