Default Magnaflow 3" Cat Comparison 94109 vs 14109

Hey guys, need to pick up a cat to get my car through Maryland safety inspection and emissions. As some of you know in MD you have a one-time safety inspection to get the car registered, then emissions testing every 2-years.

Currently running open downpipe, which obviously wont pass either test. Im thinking its gonna be easiest to go ahead and put a 3" cat on the car. Magnaflow lists there normal hi-flow 3" as 94109 seen here http://www.car-sound.com/02pro...94109
they also list a "race only" 14109 seen here http://www.car-sound.com/02pro...e.asp
which is basically a perforated core muffler with some catalyst material around it.

Magnaflow couldnt give me any flow numbers on the two, but i have to assume the "race" one flows better.

Does anyone have experience with either of the two? Any dynos of cars that added or removed a cat. I really dont want to run one but if by chance i get popped for no cat im looking at a $500-$1000 fine, plus id still have to put one in every 2 years for emissions testing. Any feedback is appreciated, btw car is 400whp ls/vtec w/ gt30r

wish i could help you.... i'm running the first one i believe.

id venture to say that the first one is probably a safer bet... i don't know MD's limits, but theres a good chance you wouldn't pass with the race one

throw a stock exhaust on the car, get it inspected, then swap it back out the next day IMO

not really an option, i dont have a stock exhaust and even if i did, it wouldnt have any way to bolt up.

i think im more looking for insight on using a 3" cat on a 400whp car and what kind of power ill lose. im gonna have to get one for inspection either way, so if i need to take it back out afterward i can. i guess ill just have to get a test pipe fabbed up so i can swap it when needed

get the cheapest cat you can buy then hollow it out. the material inside is like a honeycomb it easily breaks up with a 1 inch drill bit.
