B20/VTEC runs bad on P28 but okay on p30, any help??

B20/VTEC runs bad on P28 but okay on p30, any help??
Just like the title says...
A friend of mine has a B20/VTEC in a EK and runs very very very bad on a p28. Thing won't even idle properly. I tried my p28 hondata. same thing. Next we put a p30 in it and it runs okay. Idles good and all.
I must note that their is a OBD2 to OBD1 conversion adapter between the harness and the ECU.
Can anyone help us out? We could buy a P30 of course but seems a bit strange to me.

i can help.
get some software, socket that bitch and TUNE it.
no point in spending all that money on an engine swap and not mapping it.

What is this tuning that you speak of?
Is there some magic device that will actually allow you to map out fuel, ignition timing, and VTEC engagement for a specific motor? Tailor made? This technology stuff is amazing!!!
