Default S Light and shifting problems

My son has a 91 Accord EX, with 225000 miles, that lately has developed a problem where the S light will come on and then the car appears to be stuck in 2 or 3 gear. The S light is steady and does not flash. We've discovered that, when this happens if, you disconnect the battery and then reconnect it, the light goes out and the car shifts normally again. Any ideas as to what causes this and what might fix it?

Thank in advance for any replies.

It's the TCU - the following site explained it all:

Hi
I tried to go to that site but its temporarily down because of too much traffic. Is there anywhere else I could get that information? The s light is flashing on my car intermittantly. I have tried removing the fuse (under the hood - that usually works) but it still does it. The speedo doesn't work when its flashing but it seems to shift gears alright and isn't stuck in second gear like when the s lit up before.

I had the exact same problem on my 90 accord lx. I have a friend that is a honda master mechanic and he told me that it was the trasmission ecu. It cost me about 250 bucks to replace.
Problem was instantly solved.
Hope this helps
