Default Another cam choice thread

I have been doing research for quite some time on which set of cams I want to run in my new setup, but in my search I cant find a definite answer. It seems that most people say the pro2's need a large displacement motor to make power. Others say that there fine for my setup and have refered to such examples as D-Rob setup. Heres my setup:
Ls bottom with pr3's
Gsr head sk2 springs retainers, IM, stock ports

Now I have pro2's sitting in my garage that I can use or I can trade my friend for his BC4's. I was planning on possible milling the head or running a two layer to bum the compression up a bit. But then I wonder the question if I have enough motor for the pro2's.I say a thread awhile back with someones similar setup and DonF actually said the pro2's would be a better choice. I appreciate any advice.

With the 89mm stroke and the high comp I think the pro 2s will be fine for your setup. Post dynos when you get 'em.

X2.

Your compression will be close to 12 already. You don't need any more compression. If you look at his set-up, he had some very good bolt-ons: RMF header, performerX manifold, block girdle, balanced crank, etc. You get the picture. That set-up was well planned and it produced.

Intake/IM/header and exhaust choice will all play a part in which profile will benefit you most. Obviously you're tuning this correct? The VT you have now, is it the 1st gen S2 springs or Pro series?

As far as those, Ill be running a 3" cold air, tri y or possible and RMF if Im lucky, I have a sk2 Im as off now but I would like to get a performer x. Ans yes it will be tuned, as have all my setups.Im not new to the game just havent had experience with these cams. As far as VT its not the pro series, I know SK2 advises you to run the pro series but from what Ive researched most people use the non pro VT.

Probably the best advice that I could give you based off your current info is do not skimp on your valvetrain. Just because you've read around that people are using tuner springs with Pro cams doesn't make it ok, S2 built the Pro series VT for a reason. You go cheap and not spend a whoppin $300 for sufficient VT, you drop a valve and destroy your whole motor. Who feels like an ***? Buy some Pro series valvetrain and run your Pro2's.

X2

Running an off brand on the pro 1s is one thing, the pro 2s are no joke. Skunk also won't want to hear **** if you run another brand VT and something happens.

You made it sound like you already bought the valvetrain..? As far as those other people, are you sure those people aren't running the Pro 1's? The reason being is that Skunk2 RECCOMENDEDS, not REQUIRES, Pro series VT on this cam and people commonly run tuner series VT on these cams. As for the Pro 2, Skunk2 REQUIRES!!! Pro series valvetrain.

Damn thos sucks, that changes alot now. The motor has been in my car for quite some time now with thetuner series VT. Maybe now Ill just stick to tradin my buddy for his BC4's which wil save me the hassle of sending the head to the machine shop.
Thanks guys Im glad you shed some light on this
