Default I am the new proud owner of a '91 CRX HF. :)

Hi,

I just thought I'd introduce myself, as I guess this will be my new "home." I recently bought a '91 CRX HF I paid $1600 for it but it needed a new clutch, the driver side taillight has a small hole in it, driver side door has a small rip in it, it has a few dents/dings/paint chips, and the exhaust hangs low (missing a hanger I think). But other than that, everything is in pretty good shape. Overall I am happy with the car for the price I paid.

Anyway, I used to own a '93 Civic Hatchback DX... great car, but got stolen. Took the insurance money and paid all my debts, got this car, and still have a bit left over to spend on the car.

The first thing I did to this car was replace the clutch/pressure plate and resurface the flywheel since the clutch was totally gone.

Next thing I think I'm going to do is get some Ground Controls and KYB AGXs and slam it to get rid of the wheel gap.

As for the engine, I have a few questions. What do you think is the best bang for the buck replacement for the 70 hp beast under the hood? I live in Cali so I am kinda worried about emissions. I will definately smog my car with everything stock so I pass, then I have two years until I have to smog it again, right? I am looking to spend less than $1000 but anything around there is alright. How much do b18a ls engines go? I know with any B-series engine, I am going to need mounts too which cost around $400... plus I know I need to change my front hubs/knuckles (don't know the details on this) so I might just go with something else. Do you think I will be pleased with a d16z6 from a 5th gen Si/EX? Or should I wait and save for b18a/b16a?

Also, how much do Si door panels go for? My driver side HF one is ripped so I'm thinking of getting some Si ones since I like the CRX logo.

Do Si's have different taillights (or do JDM CRX's for that matter) than HF's? If so, how much do those usually run?

Thanks a lot!

shiznattik A.K.A. Scott

Thanks, 90SIvic...

I used to have a 91 hatch... I don't like the body style as much as the CRX. Plus I was looking for a lighter car.

On top of that, I REALLY needed a car... been looking for one for almost two months and on the way to see this one I got into an accident driving my girlfriends car (which is where some of my money is going to be going -- it needs a new hood, possibly bumper support and other misc stuff). We needed a car just to go to work and stuff like that since hers (we thought) is going to be in a shop. But as it turns out I may just by the replacement parts and do it myself, it doesn't seem that bad.

I think I may be overexaggerating on the things wrong with it. The taillight has about a silver dollar sized "hole" in it from being smashed. And the door panel rip is way in the back so it is hardly noticeable so it's not that big of a deal I just wanted Si panels.

Also, prior to getting this car I was just going to get it, keep it stock and try to sell it again. But I have a soft spot for it now (5th gen hatches still have a place in my heart, too).

Anyways, I'm thinking I might also get a CF hood since some of the dents are on the hood. Also I like the look of the wings west front bumper but I think I will wait 'til I get my motor in there and everything working right.

Nice.

I picked up my panels for $30 at the junkyard.

Thanks, b18t4

Any suggestions on motors? Should I just save up for a B18a?

Also, what year Integra coilovers/springs fit my car? 'Cause I wanted to get ones with stiffer spring rates...

Thanks!

Don't feel bad man , I paid 1800 for my 91 hf and yous is in alot better condition than mine. I guess it's where you live. I know around me 90-91 si's in good condition still go for4500.00- 5000.00.

I wish i had black interior in mine though

I think ZC or D16 would be the best under $1000 swaps. Or even a mini-me if you dont want to spend much at all.

I think you got a good deal man, the car looks nice inside and out. And you cant expect much better for a 11+ year old car.
Sorry to hear about your gf's car, that has to suck.
Do only the si and dx models come with the 3spoke steering wheel in 90-91?
My 89si came with that same steering wheel, but i got the 3spoke one free from a friend who had a 91dx.

That is a clean looking HF. I'd say you got a good deal on it. How much do you want to spend? I'd say either drop a B18A/B in there or sohc vtec turbo. B16 is not smog legal in california.

yeah, avoid hatchbacks... too heavy.

Team HF... coming to a race track near you!!

On the flip side, i bought my 90 HF for $1800 with a dented up hood/bumper.

90 - 91 CRX Taillights are the same no matter what model it is. $1600 was a hell of a good deal on that car. As far as engine swaps go, the SOHC VTEC engine for a 92 - 95 Civic will bolt up to a 88 - 91 civic / crx transaxle and is smog legal in California if you change the ecu and wiring over from the car it came from. This swap does not require that you change the front hubs and axles, the splines on the axles for an HF will fit in any 88 - 91 civic / crx transaxle. But, the Si hubs and axles are much heavier duty and will probably last longer. The ZC and B16 are not legal in California as far as I know.

Damn that's a good price.

Everyone up here in Denver somehow think that the car's are more expensive then somewhere else.

It's hard to find a PEICE OF **** CRX lower then 2000.

I bought my 91 DX with a perfect interior, perfect exterior, but a shitty engine for.........3200!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GOD DAMN!!!! To bad that these car's aren't that popular up here, so everyone just jacks up the price. I was also only 16 and was with my Mother(no car buying experience) so we didn't really know how to hagle the price down. I just wanted a nice CRX. That was it. (plus the crappy engine was my excuse to do a ZC swap )

Wow, thanks for all the love and help/suggestions!

I was starting to think it wasn't such a great deal since the clutch had to be replaced right away...

I think I'm going to save up for a b18 or d16z6 w/ greddy turbo. Does the turbo fit in the engine bay?

Once again, thanks for all the replies everyone!

damn nice car and nice deal I paid $1400 for my 88 HF with 186,000, a bad drivers seat, bad tires, shitty rear quarters, missing side molding, and some other lil **** I had to replace. CRX's are pretty hard to find around here.
