Default D16y8 - Accessory Belts Won't Stay On

This is a very annoying problem for me... I recently built an all motor D16y8, revving to about 8000 rpm. I don't know if it's too high revs, or damaged pulleys, or what... Just seeing if others have had similar problems.

Just weeks after finishing my build, my power steering belt (outermost belt) got thrown off while driving (not hard, just around town). I didn't bother replacing it, because no ps didn't really bother me much. I removed my AC, so the next belt on my crank pulley is my alternator belt (innermost belt). Just a few days after the ps belt was thrown off, my alternator belt was thrown. Obviously, I had to relace it. So I did, and two days later, got thrown off again. At that point I thought, 'maybe I'm just an idiot and can't put on an accessory belt'. So, I took it to a local mechanic, and had them replace the alternator belt, yet again. They told me the pulleys appeared to be lined up just fine, but the belt only lasted one day after they replaced it.

I'm tired of wasting money on accessory belts; this is futile. Any ideas on what needs to be done here?

are you tensioning them correctly? you have the tensioners in place right? not just pulling up on the particular pump and tightening?

Well, there doesn't appear to be any tensioners on the alternator belt... The alternator itself mounts on a pivot up top and a slider bracket on the bottom. I just tension the belt with a pry bar and tighten away. This is exactly what the mechanic did when I took it in.

OEM belts or aftermarket ?

We began to have this issue late last season but rota's shift point was 9500.

Sold the set up, so never got it fixed.

thats why its coming off. your supposed to have a real tensioner. i can't pick it out because i have an H22 but the same thing was happening to my alt. belt. just check to see if you have all the brackets shown here.

Ok, thank you... I was really starting to get confused.

I've been using aftermarket belts from Kragen. The alternator belt I've been using is the Goodyear Gatorback, part number 4040315. My redliine is 8250 rpm, a bit less than 9500 rpm. Do you think that might be the problem? How long were the belts lasting on your setup? Mine only last for a day or two...

I really can't compare our belt popping of to your's. The engine only had about 9 miles on it, a 1/4 mile at a time. Total run time was may be on hour with dyno pulls.

I would just check that the pulley's are tight and the belt is tight. Make sure the alternator is tight.

If that doesn't solve the problem or if you can't find anything, I'd PM one of the tuners in the drag racing forum.

Jeff@Tempest, Tony1, Turbo-charged AKA Joe Simpson he owns Tempest Racing.
