Wait, so you got a ticket for old taillights, and you want to replace them with JDM (illegal in the US) taillights instead?

i believe the JDM taillights are illegal because they dont have some Reflectors inside that are needed.
but i could be completly off point.

Correct. Japan does not require rear side reflectors (or marker lamps I believe), like the US does.
However, the real reason they are illegal, is stupidly simple. They were not tested and approved by the DOT, and therefore lack a DOT number, and are therefore illegal.
Of course, "legal" and "passing inspection" are not always the same thing.

If you want cheap ones go for Ebay.
Make sure somewhere on the they have a SAE or DOT stamp. At least that should keep you from getting a ticket- that is if you find another cop with absolutely nothing better to do that pull people over for bright tailights!
Protect and serve- whatever happened to that?
