Default Balance shaft eliminator kits [Kaizenspeed.com]

I am negotiating a trade for a 1998 Honda Prelude SH and 3500 dollars to me for my 2000 Honda Civic Si.

Bored .2 over
H22A4
Zero miles on the rebuild
140,000 miles on the car

What I am worried about is the balance shafts are knocking and was told that all that was needed to be done was install a Balance Shaft Eliminator Kit from Kaizenspeed.com

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Kaizenspeed.com &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">BALANCE SHAFT ELIMINATORS
Our balance shaft eliminator kit includes ALL necessary parts to cleanly eliminate your balance shafts for ALL H-series and F-series engines! Our full kit includes:

-Billet aluminum blockoff plate
-Billet steel crankshaft spacer
-All necessary plugs to maintain and increase oil pressure by blocking balance shaft bearings (without removing them)
-Billet aluminum plugs for the oil pump
-Step-by-step illustrated instructions

$125.00</TD></TR></TABLE>

I was wondering anyone knew anything more about this product.

pic of car i'm possibly trading for:

Thanks to anyone who can help!

The kit is good, but i would be wary about buying a rebuilt engine with problems from the start. The engine needs to come out to install that kit incase you didnt know.

Why did he go to the trouble of getting a rebore and installing new pistons, yet not bother to sort out the knock?

Personally i would never buy a rebuilt engine unless it was built by a known good builder. And would never buy an engine with problems unless i was going to take the time to tear it down.

just to expand on that, the engine has to come out because the crank mains have to be removed in order to plug the oil orifice for the balancer shafts. This requires drilling and tapping and the block needs to be clean of metal shavings before it is put back together.

If there was some problem with the BS couldn't you just leave the belt off?

That is, of course, assuming the problem lies with the BS and not something else.

yes, i'll be doing the work myself.

So, the BS rotate opposite of the crank to balance the crank. by eliminating this, would this make the crank rotate less smoothly or rough being as there is nothing to balance it?

It's just for passenger comfort, it won't harm the engine or anything. It will just vibrate a little more. You can leave the belt off and you'll be fine. You'll free up a few ponies as well

I would get the current owner to remove the belt 1st and see if the knocking goes away. I have never heard of balance shafts knocking.

I too would remove that BS belt before I bought the car to make sure that is the problem.

No, you do not want to JUST remove the balance shafts. There is a huge oil pressure loss from this. 20-30psi. Will cause problems. Lack of vtec engagement, and low pressure at higher rpm.

are you sure about that ? The only reason I could come up with would be that oil clearence is what creates oil pressure.

Im not sure but did the kit even always come with the plugs ?

Think about it. If you just removed the balance shafts, the oil pressure has to drop. The oil will follow the path of least resistance.

Think about putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose. When you press hard, there is quite a bit more pressure in the hose. If you take your thumb completely away, there's much less pressure.

yeah how do you know its the balancer shafts knocking anyways? and if it is you are probably losing oil pressure there and have bearing material in the oil pan. not something I'd want to deal with unless you want to have to dive into the engine right away.

Sounds to me, like they guy rebuilt the engine, didn't have a clue what he was doing, and when he started the engine it knocks.. big surprise

Realizing he doesn't know how to build a motor; he thinks, crap let's just sell it.

He's thinking "let's just tell him somethin simple like the balance shafts so he'll still buy my crap"

You're right but only in the sense that he removes the shafts and doesnt plug the gap..the kit effectively does yhat blocking off any oil that would flow to the shafts ergo increasing oil pressure..

The other benefit is that it frees up weight from the rotating assembly, more horses and torque to the wheel..

Ordered My Balance Shaft Eliminator kit from Kaizenspeed today 135 (That includes shipping), the Guy Shawn is VERY helpful and willing to answer any and all questions about the product, Feel very good about buying it from him.

I plan on doing a DIY for this kit as I feel many people are having as much trouble finding a straight forward answer thread using the Search Bar as I am. See you guys in 2 or 3 days when it gets here.

how much power does this really free up? like 2-3 horsepower or like 10-15?? is it really worth the few ponies you get??

h22a4 has frm sleeves. (fiber reinforced metal) Requires special stones for boring or honing. Apparently very few shop have the right honing/ boring device for the operation. I've heard some porsche specialists have the right tool for the job. Likely the builder was unaware, cause of knock?
