1999 honda accord front axel replacement
Just got a tune-up for my 1999 Honda Accord 4dr/4 cyl/EX sedan. (190,000 miles)The mechanic said the axel seals are leaking and I need to replace the front 2 axels. $350 parts/ $250 labor, $600 total. Looked on-line and new axels cost $50-$70 a piece. Studied how to remove and install new axels and decieded I best leave it up to the pros. Does $600 sound right?
Thanks,
Doug

It's not completely out of line, I paid $225 for an axle replacement on my '95 Camry a few months ago. Get other quotes, unless you want to do the work yourself.
The good news is that your CV boots will be replaced (are a part of the new axle).

$250 labor!!? it shouldn't take but 30-40 minutes to do for a trained mechanic in a fully (or partially) equiped shop.
yeah it's not hard to do. if you can't find any how-to's on it'll then i'll tell you how.

IN A NUT SHELL
Jack the car up and brace it so it will not fall
take the tire off
take the screw off the pinion steering and pop the tire rod out.
take off the bottom ball joint nut and remove the ball nut out of the bottom frame.
take the big nut off the axle shaft and pull the assembly out wards off the shaft.
where the shaft goes into the trans pry out with a screw driver and pull the shaft out.
reverse to put it back together.
Bam done!!
Good luck
