Default Random CEL in a '92 Si (d16z6) ... WTF?!

I've tried doing some research but have not come up with anything, so maybe someone on H-T can help me out. I purchased my '92 Si back in early 2007, and my brother was the previous owner of the car since about 2000.

It seems that every 7-9 months or so since my brother first purchased the car, the check engine light comes on. BUT, as soon as the car is shut off and fired up again, the light is off. When the light does come on once in a blue moon, the car runs absolutely normal... no different then as if the light never came on.

Since the light turns off as soon as the car is shut off, I haven't been able to see what codes are being thrown. I wouldn't have even cared about the light until it turned on twice within the last week, but again, as soon as I turn the ignition off, the light is gone as well.

What in the world could be causing this? how can I check what codes are being thrown? should I even be concerned? I remember hearing from someone that the ecu might just go through some random split second glitch causing the light to come on, but I have a hard time believing that. Everything else works fine. Has anyone else encountered this before?

PS- I NEVER pull the ground to the battery to reset the ecu.

Thanks for the help guys, any solid advice would be much appreciated!

the code should be stored in the ecu since you havent reset the ecu, jumper the wires under the passenger side kick panel by the ecu and pull the code
