Broken camshaft key, 97
I'm working on a 97 2.2 v4. The timing belt is good and spins when trying to start the car. The Key between the cam pully and the cam shaft is sheared. The bolt that was supposed to be on the end was loose, not off, but out at leat 5,6 turns out. I havn't gotten a new key yet. So i havn't tested just putting a new key in and seeing what it does.
So what i'm wondering is has anyone ever had this porblem. Could it be a bigger engine problem?
Thanks

I think I heard of this one other time, not something that normally happens though.
Is the key at the camshaft gear a separate part or is it built into the camshaft gear? I can't recall.
either way, you could have valve damage. Because the key was sheared and no longer turning the camshaft in time with the crankshaft, the valves could have been left in the down position when the piston was coming up and made contact resulting in bent valves.

the key is a seperate peice. $3 from honda directly...
How would i know if the valves are bent other then running the car. Is there some way to look from the top and see what position they are in?
Also is the crankshaft pully and the camshaft pully a 1 to 1 ratio or are they off. I wondering if i line up the keyway can the pistons be out of alignment due to rotation. Or will as long as the key way lines up it be in time. Figuring the cam never moved after it broke. But i know they tryed to start it a few times, spinning the engine.
Thanks

So yea, i got my new Key today and it allows the engine to run fine, however there is just a bit of play.
Has anyone ever had this
Do you think i could just put a shim or expoy in there to tighten it up. The bolt will hold in so there would be no possiblity of it coming out. Just breaking again.
Any ideas?
I just dont want to rely on a loose key or is that normal the engine does have 238,000 on it.
Thanks

my keyway sheared on my 97 accord 2.2l and i did a compression test today the next cylinder in the firing order where the cam stoped is usually where the vavle gets bent.. and for me it was cylinder no.3 soo i noticed the difference between psi on the compression test and found that was true where the cam stops the next cylinder in firing order bends a valve... I replaced a the keyway but the car runs rough at idle i believe its the vavle
New To the site just bought a 95 honda accord, 300k miles. car stopped thought just a broken timing belt, after taking apart found out cam is broken. wierd because it broke just passed the timing pulley not on a lobe just inside first bearing cap..should I replace the motor or is break due to age..thought about just replacing cam..
try not to change topic in the middle of a thread just start a new one but to answer ur question was the car overheated cus u might have a warpped head. and just as if the belt broke u still have the possibility to bend valve. giving the miles just opt for a new engine
