Mitutoyo is what you want for precision measuring equipment. I'm assuming you want this for an engine build. Buy a set of micrometers, dial bore gauge, calipers, and some feeler gauges. I have to warn you this stuff is spendy but im pretty sure there are cheaper alternatives like starrett, SPI Japan and a few others, just make sure you read their specs to determine how accurate they are.

would this be a good buy for dial bore gauges? this way you could measure any cylinder bore, main bore, rod bore, etc.

When you guys measure for rod bearing shells do you mic the journal, then just dial bore gauge the rod bearing in the rod tq'd?

You can do it that way just dont scratch the bearing. There is a special mic for bearings it has a rounded end( I dont know the technical term for it). I just mic the bearings and journals, then bore gauge everything else. There are several ways to do it though.

Oh, and it's a bit cheaper through Enco for the same thing.
