you did a good job, but why is it that everytime someone says "i got a new tatoo" or "i painted my helment" for example, do i feel the need to buckle in and get ready for something seriously cheesy.

no offense. i guess i'm just not into the whole pirate gypsy homo erotic thing.

Hell of alot better than I could ever do.
You've got some talent, go get an airbrush and turn it up a couple notches.

If it comes out good, I'll let you airbrush a picture of a skull on fire screaming "ZOMG VTAAAAAAAAAAK!!!" on my hood.

you mean like one of those ?! i do kick myself now for not spraying ... my original plan was to airbrush. My concern was durablity, i didnt think the paint would hold up as well as the one shot enamel.

I just got the Devilbiss last week so im thinking its inaugural run may be a clear over the one shot for more durability/better looks.

its hard to tell but is your avatar an Austin Healy or Aston Martin ? it looked like a Healy to me but the pic was small. This is why i ask...

LOL I was thinking like a paasche D/A airbrush. The "hobby" kind that doesn't throw as much paint.

It's actually a '58 MGA 1500 (the single cam one). I did a ground up resto on this. Basically the first car I ever did any serious work on, so it's my avatar on all the boards I'm on. Nice Austin.

I've airbrushed for a little over 4 years and will only used Iwata. Ive used Paasche before and was unhappy with the results. just my .02

I do some Tig welding after hours for a friend of mine and he had a couple of helmets lying around so he asked his friend who's a professional painter specialising in air brushing if he'd customise them for him.
The pics below show the results, as you can see the painter is pretty damn good.
Darren, my friend isn't going to use them but put them on display at his factory
Regards Andrew from Oz.

Dont take this the wrong way bc both these helmets are trully custom, to the average viewer you probably impressed the hell out of them. IMO both are FAR from professional. Since u decided to make ur own thread in my thread i have to point out the obvious.

helmet #1. Anyone can paint lightning in the first hour of purchasing an airbrush, not hard at all. also anyone can stencil out "trikfab" on a computer and bevel it in. finish with cc. again, :not amazed:

helmet #2. Little more in depth but still not impressed, you can clearly see theses skulls are another template over and over with just minor shading adjustments to look like different angles. Background, again made with another stencil (most likely some type of netting). then finished it off with some more specialty stenciled lettering. followed by clear in a booth.

Im not a fan of stencils as you can see.

This gives the average viewer an idea of how much stenciling took place on this helmet, this took less than 2 mins to spot out ... and honestly, i gave up circling them after this many, its almost like a game of i spy on that helmet. the only "professional" part i see is the smooth clear coat someone did.

IMO stencils are cookie cutter = for beginners.

I have not stenciled anything. I have completely drawn this out by HAND in my living room from step one. HELL I even painted with a bristle brush !

Next time you want to show off what your "professional airbrusher friend" can do. Make your own thread.

thanks for sharing, I respect his work but its still not what I would consider professional.

Yes clearcoat will be done after i finsih the other side, im in full agreement abt the fumes staining the paint. I think that would def effect the paint over time. That stuff was impossible to get off in the first place.

I'd like to do something special to mine, but I have two problems. 1st I'm always laying my helmet down somewhere so it'd probably get all scratched up, and 2nd, I suck at drawing or painting.

You need to be a little less harsh on people posting in your thread man, yea it's your thread, but there's not a problem with posting similar things in it. Like the other dude said, respect.

Im guessing you didnt read the entire thread from your reply. The guy that posted the helmets didnt paint them himself. If I understand what he wrote, he does tig welding after hours at a friends shop and his friend's, friend that is a professional painter specializing in airbrush did.

It wouldve been one thing if he painted it himself, but they are his friends friend's prized welding helmets that he doesnt even use. They both are on display as show peices at a factory !
My first post clearly says this is my first welding helmet i have ever attempted to paint, im no pro by any means and i find myself learning something new everyday. Im more than willing to listen to people that actually do the work themselves, and have something constructive to add to the conversation. I def wouldnt mind other artist showing off quality work and discussing custom paint effects/techniques/etc. There is always something to learn in the custom paint industry. (even though i posted this thread is in the welding/fab forum)

It wasnt my intention to be harsh, more informative to people maybe wanting to start airbrushing/paint. Some people may look at those helmets and think they could never do that when in reality its just a stencil with some light shading.

but switching gears now.... here is the start of the left side of the helmet. And preliminary sketch on the front face. im happy with my progress.

Also some shoes i just finished
