Should I buy or not
My friend will sell me his 96' Honda Accord EX Automatic with 156,000 miles on it. I've known him for about 4 yrs and know that most of the miles are highway. The price is 4grand, he's just replaced the timing belt and brakes and tires, and maybe a few other odds and ends. I'm only hoping that the car lasts w/out any major overhauls being necessary. Any opinions on what I should check out on the car b4 thinking bout buyin it? Is it worth it at all, I'll probably put like 12k on it a year. And since I know honda's are very dependable, I just want another opinion. Will the car run fine the next two years or crap out on me in a few months w/ that many miles on it
Hondas are good cars, and cars will get miles on them. It really depends on what you want to do to it. Just driving it stock, it may or may not give you trouble. I used to have a Civic with 165,000 miles on the chasis, and it was fine. Are you going to do a motor swap??
no, my lil bro just wants a dependable car and he's wondering if there's anything he should know about this type of honda before he gets into it, ie: service, belt replacement, normal maintenance schedule and will the car with that many miles last another 2-5 years that's all. he's not into tricking his car out because he usually wraps em around telephone poles or drops the tranny in them by mistake, just kidding lil bro!!! help him out guys give him your opinion on the car he wants to buy. thanks

it should last far more than that, i have seen accords with well over 400,000 miles original miles on them, but they took care of their honda.. suggest you buy it especially for 4k, i bought my 92 accord ex for $5,500.00 so you are getting a good deal there.
cars we have had in at my dealer:
1991 Accord = 918,000 miles
1988 Accord LX-i = 342,000 miles (technicians car)
1992 Accord = 299,000 miles
COUNTLESS 200k cars. The 1987-89 Accord LX-is are tanks. You cannot kill them. One of our techs got hit in the 1/4 panel by a semi. It looks rough but will not die.

Heh, yea I'd say it's still got lots of life left in it. My '89 Accord LX-i is at 296,200 right now, and my moms '94 Accord EX is at 158,000 and both cars run and drive perfectly, and are 100% mechanically solid without any problems and zero breakdowns. Mine was even in a wreck about 2 years ago and did $5k front end damage, and it still ran perfectly afterwards (could have driven it the hour drive home if it hadn't puncured the radiator) and it didn't even throw off the front end alignment. Brian is right...you just can't kill 'em, lol
I have an '87 with almost 240,000 (beaten on a daily basis) on it and it still runs strong and the A/C still works!
Oh yeah and I have on of those '94 EX Accords with 190,000 on it that has an insatiable appetite for nitrous (about 10 pounds of it every weekend)
My point is ,if the car is maintained ,there is no need to worry about mileage on a Honda.
They just kick ***!

where you from? I bought my 94 accord LX coupe with 87,000 miles on it for $5,600.... he was asking almost $7,000
It had the following
Sunroof (Installed at 47MILES)
power locks
power windows
cruise
tilt wheel
SRS system
Antenna in the rear window
Indash Honda AM FM CD Cassette
Tinted Windows
Auto (pro or con depending upon how you look at it, I think it is a PLUS)
new tires
I had to get the following
JACK!!!! who in the hell tries to sell a car without a JACK!!!
Tire Iron
Missing pieces, screw covers and the locks for the rear truck tailight access covers
the bolt that secures the tire in the trunck (nothing like that thumping noise of the tire when you hit a bump)
Total about $60 $20 for all the missing parts and $40 for the 2 ton hydraulic jack and jack stands from checker auto parts
Timing belt service at 91K miles $638.87 at least I got a new waterpump, dirve belts and timing belt.
Front metallic brake pads and grease $20
Total investment in car about $6,400

right now it is a buyer's market. I think that any car with 15X,XXX miles on it no matter how well it is made, is gonna have some troubles
Struts
Suspension parts
stuff like that you will most likely have to fix...... I think that $3,500 is a better starting place..... I got a 94 LX coupe with half the miles for $5,600
I think Brian is right though a honda should go a long time. They are just simoply better cars to begin with...

pull the oil cap off and shine a flashlight in there- if it is clean (not black or too brown, if it is a clean aluminum color - great) I say go for it. Drive and make sure the trans shifts smoothly, not harsh or with flare ups. Put your hand between the wheels and body (where mud flap would be on front) to see if they share the same gap on the left and right sides.
If you check the stuff these guys told you to and find that all is well You should go for it. I have a 96 Special Edition and that is to cheap for me to sell mine for. However you should be somewhat skeptical at such a good price. JMO
