Youll need the tranny, a clutch set if your tranny isnt a 88 model, some oil for the tranny, and thats prob about it.

The spline count on the input shaft is different between 88 and 89-91 models.

88 has 21 spline input shaft trans
89-2000 have 20 spline input shaft to the trans

88 has 190mm flywheel
89 has 200mm flywheel
90-2000 have 212mm flywheel.

Your next task is to figure out what year transmission you are getting, so then you can figure out what clutch and flywheel you need to get. If you dont want to buy anything, the only transmission year that will work and have 5 speeds is another 88 SI or dx transmission.

so if I wanna put an '88 tranny in my '89 i just need a clutch for an '88? Any concerns about the difference in flywheel sizes? Do I need an '88 or and '89 flywheel if I get a new one?

I would source a 90+ flywheel and run a 88 tranny with a 87 prelude disc and 90+ pressure plate. Or if you wanted to go easier clutchcity online sells a 88 "upgrade" clutch set that includes all the right parts for the swap.

Thanks for that. ok one more question. If I want to put a 92-95 transmission in my 89, I wouldn't have to buy a clutch right? I found one of those cheaper than the clutch set for the 88 tranny. Or are the mounts and axles and stuff all different?

You would need HASports hydro tranny conversion kit. Im not sure if someone else makes one or about the other parts. CHeck HASports site for more info.

this is correct, the only way to run a 92+ d series trans in an ef is with the just-released Hasport Hydro conversion for the d-trans. It will probably be more expensive than the transmission itself.. which kinda sucks.
