Default Tranny seems to be going out??

Hello to all, newbie here...

My wife's 2001 Civic LX with 120k miles is having problems, all of a sudden, it seems with the auto transmission....During acceleration at low speeds, the engines revs, but the car barely moves...It just started this today, and luckily I was not too far away to turn around and get it back home...I'm no mechanic, by any means....Checked the tranny fluid level, and it was ok, all other fluids ok, it's just acting like the tranny is "slipping", if that makes sense...also, the "check engine" light came on when this all started, and stays on now...The cars runs fine, it's when you try to accelerate that the engine revs but the car barely goes anywhere..

I'm gonna call around for a shop in the morning, see if they will come tow it and fix it...never dealt w/auto trannys before, I've always driven standard cars for myself...I was just wondering if anyone can enlighten me on what is probably happening here, any ideas or suggestions, and how much it's gonna cost to fix, roughly...I'm not rich, by any means, and I don't won't to get reamed by a shop 'cause I don't know the right things to ask them...

Sorry for being such a noob, I checked the FAQs abit but couldn'y find anything...

Thanks in advance for any and all responses. they're greatly appreciated,
Slaphppy7

yeah i had the same problem with my 02 lx. It cost me around 2300 to fix it (1600 for the tranny and like 700-800 to install it). If I was u, ur better off letting them look at it tell u wat's wrong then go find a tranny. That will save u some money that way if u can find one.

SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME!!

1 week ago at 119K miles my transmission did the SAME EXACT THING.

I'm fixing mine (parts and labor) for $700 total. Putting another auto in since i dont have the time or money to do the 5 speed swap.

Where there problems with the 01-05 automatic trannys? I've been looking at buying and 01 with the auto, but I've read about a few of the trannys being bad. Was Honda covering these costs?

2200? did they quote that to you from the dealer? Id just either slap another one in and add a cooler to it OR id get it rebuilt with aftermarket parts. contact Level 10 or TCI. I doubt TCI will send you any complete kits since they discontinued theirs but Level 10 will help you out. Plus, after that, youll have a tranny that will hold punishment

If you read my original post, I'm no expert on Hondas or auto transmissions..I'm no mechanic....I've done a few things with my '95 Cavalier (standard) like change out brake pads, water pumps, etc., no big whoop...and worked on the Honda abit, too, but not auto trannys...

I didn't contact a dealer, I always thought they were a big rip-off before most others..Of course, it is WAY past the warranty period....A buddy at work is a semi-mech, he made some calls and no one (friends at shops) wanted to mess with a Honda auto tranny, so I bit the bullet and told the guy at the shop to do it....he said "complete overhaul" is what it needed...

I must add, this mom and pop shop has been there for 40+ years, and have a good reputation...Rather than run around and try to buy stuff and have someone throw it together for me, I decided to let the man do it all there, at his Honda certified shop..

Hope I didn't get taken, we will see...I will post back when I get it back, hopefully Friday...It was gonna take 3-4 days, from what the shop said... I guess that's reasonable(?)
