question about swapping guage clusters??
Can I swap a set of guages out of a 4 door civic into mine? I have the 89 STD without the tach and I found a guage cluster with tach in my local junkyard. If it will swap, does the wiring have to be changed? If so, which ones and is there a website that shows how to do it? Sorry for all the questions but I would like to know before they crush the car and I miss out.
PS--One last thing, It's speedo says 206,000 miles! Is it possible for me to swap my speedo into that guage cluster so I don't have to look at that many miles on the ticker?
Thanks guys.

if its out of a 88 or 89 its plug and play, thats what I have a tach cluster from a 4 door sedan. paid $25 dollars from a local you pick it. 90-91 are different beasts and will take more work to make fit and work.

Yes the DX or STD speedometer fits right into the LX cluster and vice-versa. you can have a tach for cheep, the redline just registers a bout 500 rpm lower than the Si tach, big deal. If you have a ZC or B16 the redline is different than the Si is too for the difference that makes.

swapping out the odmeter is easy just 4 screws on the back of the cluster. YOu have to pull of the cover 1st of course.(the plastic covering up the gauges.)
THe entire speedometer pulls out and fits right into the other one. why go to the trouble of hacking the speedometer apart when his bolts right in as is. And thats what I did too. just so mine retained the original miles of the car with the new cluster. I kept the other lower milage speedo just in case mine dies.

So my STD hatch needs a tach..
If I were to buy a new guage cluster, what cars should I pull it off of? I just need the tach, and I'm willing to cut apart the cluster. I'm willing to hack it up, as it's just a beater rally car.
Would, say, a 1st Gen CRX work? or a 3rd Gen Civic?

just to clarify this,
speedo/speedometer - the speed you are driving
odometer - the milage your car has
ive already seen 2 people get these mixed up in this post

I photographed my swap on my 91 std. I also kept my old odometer. You can see what I did at http://groups.msn.com/Thumpu77sphotos/guageswap.msnw
hope this helps a little.
If you get a cluster off of the 4 door sedan. LX I believe it is, has a tachometer cluster, Tach has a 6,500 redline, If you have a 88-89 get one from a 88-89 its plug and play. THe DX Speedometer module fits right into the Tachometer cluster with NO mods. They are identical modules. I have my DX( same as STD) speedometer on the LX cluster, the HF will work I believe but it has a 5,500 redline. Just remember to get the right year 88-89 fit each other and 90-91 are different and fit only 90-91 cars. I think the Wagon works too from what I hear, its ALL in keeping in the right year groups. OH, and I have a '89 DX Hatch with a 88 LX cluster with the 89 DX speedo mounted in it so I speek from experience. The 90-91 will not work. And this interchangibility appears to only work for the 88-89 not the 90-91 group.

MARTINI......read the posts above you.
Yeah, thanks, I did. It says 88-89 are PNP, but doesn't mention the older clusters. Which is why I was asking. The older clusters are MUCH cheaper, and since I don't care about appearance at all, I was just wondering about the linkages.
ONLY 88-89 clusters are plug and play with 88-89 cars. Not earlier not later. Apparently the Speedo won't swap between clusters on the 90-91 units but they do with the 88-89 with no mods. Thats what I have in mine, 88 LX cluster with my '89 DX spedo just to keep milage corect. needed no mods and fits perfectly. Lept the LX speedo n case mine dies. THis all in an '89 hatch DX. Tach redline is 6,500 ZC enging redline is 7,200 cost me only $25 at a local yard. cluster had only 86,000 miles on it.
