how in the world, can a bad fuel pump cause you to use too much fuel? any unused fuel by the motor, is pumped back to the tank via the RETURN LINE.
so id love to know how a bad fuel pump makes you use more gas?

Nope. The car's running too rich. The fuel pump supplies volume. The FPR, injectors, and the ECU are the final determinants the amount of fuel actually going into the cylinder.
OP: Are there any check engine lights on?
My EM1 was getting shitty gas mileage as well. My problem stemmed from a bad fuel pressure regulator. I replaced it with one from a junkyard (D series) and the mileage numbers improved drastically. It only cost me $2 to fix.
Your problem could be 1 out of 200 billion things. Online sites are not a good way to get information about a vague and vast issue like this one. "Black spark plugs" usually mean the car is running rich. The REASON why it's running rich could be so many things that it would be impossible to E-fix a car that nobody on here has had the opportunity to actually diagnose.
Driveability issues like yours are sometimes hard to diagnose. If there is a CEL on, I'd start by checking there. From there, you'd have to have expensive computer equipment to accurately check everything.
Take the car somewhere. Have it checked out and save yourself a headache.

Does your check engine light work? Does the bulb come on for a few seconds when you start the car?
I would stop throwing parts at it. The fuel rail has no effect if the injectors are stock as long as it's big enough to feed the stock injectors. Hope you didn't pay much for your new one.
