How loud will 2 1/4" cat-back be on my car?
I'm looking to get a new cat-back & muffler from a muffler shop. I understand that it will be a fairly cheap mod. less than 100 bucks. That leaves me $$ for other things.
But how loud will this 2 1/4" cat back exhast be on my car? I've got a DX that's completely stock-- header, cat & resonator. The engine is a weak d1.5 with worn rings -- so i rev it a lot to get it moving-- I compensate. In other words i push it hard to get medocre speed out of it.
I really don't want it too loud for a few reasons.
Is there a cheap, high flow muffler that is quiet? Or are all quiet, high flow mufflers expensive? Would most muffler shops be able to provide what i'm asking for?
FYI -- I know this alone wont give me a big gain. But it will, however, work with whatever swap or mods i may do in the future.
And i did search this topic. But it's still hard to guess exactly how this setup would sound on MY car.
thanks for reading

Loudness depends on muffler used motor and other mods.
A cammed B16 will be louder with the same exhaust then a stock D15.
What kind of muffler are you looking for a canister a box? Are you going to run a resanator?

it also depends on how high you rev it... also consider what mods you wont in the future... if u want to mod it later down the road 2-1/4 - 2-1/2 will be fine for an all motor set up... but i would say if u want something quiet w/ 2-1/4, i would go with an ES tuning muffler w/ a resonator...
I say with a REAL catalytic converter and a resonator with that piping and a es oval muffler you will have nice flowing, a nice sound but not ricer or to attract cops.
Imo i say you ditch the exhaust idea and covert you mpfi you will gain more power then the exhaust, and when u ready to swap, its all plug in play.

First off thanks very much to those who've responded to my question.

***$nyper,
I have the stock resonator. And i'd like a cheap quiet muffler which doesn't restrict airflow-- if that exists .

if you're running a worn out DPFI motor, why are you installing a 2 1/4" exhaust? sounds as if you have bigger fish to fry.

Exhaust will not help you when your motor is in the condition you describe.
Do an in car rebuild and convert to MPFI first. That will provide a benefit FAR beyond what doing some exhaust work will accomplish.

I just put 2.25 exhaust on my 88 si , with a d16a6 in it. high flow catalytic converter with two resonators is what i put on and its alot deeper sounding than what i had with my stock setup with a racing muffler ,, sound definitely carries alot farther than my stock setup but i dont think its to loud.. if you were to go with 2.25 i would go with the high flow cat ,one or two resonators and a high flow muffler, i didnt go with a muffler, but if to loud is ur concern i would go with one .. I didnt really think it would be any louder than what i already had and it wasnt really just a deeper tone. hope this helps jt
my advice, get that 2 1/4 piping, get the longest resonator, or 2 small ones. get a oval canister that is basically straight through(not angled inside or has baffles inside) 2 1/4, inlet and outlet. but run it so that it looks stock. you'll have good flow and it'll sound decent.
edit* and add a tip if you want to, too

use magnaflow muffler and some resonators leave the cat off and i think the b18b ls motors and the d16 non vtecs are louder then the vtec ones. GSR are pretty quite i have a apexi world sports i got it used for 300shipped best dam money spent but i think since i am turboed it is restricting some of that power. Ha
dont want to threadjack, but want to ask a question here. I too am doing a 2 1/4" exhaust, d16a6, head is being built. I have a 12 inch highflow magnaflow cat, and a 5"X8" oval, 18" long Maglaflow muffler. I was going to try it first without a resonator to see how raspy it will be and then spend the money later if it needs one. Should I just go ahead and get one on order now, or wait and see? Anyone running something similar, stock routing, just 2.25"? thanks!
2.25 piping with just a can is loud here is a link for more exhausts https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1340434
Again, i thank everyone who's responded to my question.

Traxxasx,
I never thought of that. Do the MPFI swap now. Because eventually i'll either swap the engine or sell it to someone who'll swap the engine. But whatever engine gets swapped in will be MPFI.
I thought putting MPFI on the engine i have now would have been a waste of money. But i suppose it wouldn't be waste if the MPFI set up could be used on the new eninge that will some day be swapped in.

The car will eventually need an engine swap. But until i get more $ and time the worn out DPFI motor suits my needs.
A catback is just a cheap easy mod that i can do before the bigger engine swap project is done.

Yeah i didn't have any luck finding a super quiet aftermarket exhaust for 2 1/4 piping, so I just grabbed my friends 89 Turbo supra muffler ( same exact size and look as our stock muffler ) the supra muffler has a 2 1/4 inlet and then has 2 1 1/8 outlets, It sounds completely stock on my car, all you hear is the engine, and im sure it flows better than stock.
i have a pic if interested
