need help with sparkplug order and smog results
so I went for my smog test today, and I barely failed
. Well the guy told me It's probably a quick fix, so I figured I could probably do it myself; This is what I did to the car before I went, car was recently purchased with a sohc sc swap non v tec it's in a 91 crx si with only dc sports headers and an aem cold air intake
New
1 spark plugs n wires gapped correctly w/ dilectric grease
2 ignition rotor
3 dizzy cap and gasket
4 antifreeze
5 thermostat
6 battery
7 ground cables
8 timing belt
9 fuel filter
10 pcv valve
11 valve cover, head, intake, exhaust manifold gasket, torqued correctly
12 O2 sensor
13 oil and filter
14 timing set
15 brake fluid
16 tranny oil
17 air filter
18 radiator and gas cap
19 valve job
before doing this I used up a bottle of stp fuel system cleaner
But I still failed, the guy told me to check my sparkplugs torque and wires, because I was getting fuel out of my exhaust, he said maybe a vacuum or fuel leak but my timing was correct and since the motor is fairly new that it shouldn't be that hard to fix, but gas was leaking from my tailpipe
I went home and my plug wires were not correctly ordered, My vacuum had no leaks
the only things I failed was
1 HC (PPM) at 15 139, 134 max n 25 mph 108 108 max
2 CO (%) at 15 mph, .89 .82 max
3 NO (PPM) at 15 mph, 1396 847 max
questiion:
1 anyone have the distributor to cylinder firing order for a 91 crx si with a sohc zc non v-tec, and can having the plugs wired incorrectly cause this?
2 The only thing I haven't changed is the catalyic converter, will this help me pass?
3 you smog wizards out their, based on my results can you recommend what to fix.
I have no codes and nothing comes out of my tailpipe now that I rearranged the wires a little, no smoke nothing, no eating oil or coolant
thank you so much if you read this, and for the help

it was probably the fuel cleaner how many tanks did u go threw from the time u put the fuel system cleaner in to the time u smog it
i would run threw the tank completely till the point were your almost going to run out of gas then fill it up and test again if there was any of the fuel system cleaner in your tank it's going to make your car run rich
hope this helped

I went through 1 whoe tank like you described and then a 1/4 tank. I'm thinking of putting the stock airbox and headers on their and change the cat too, On my dizzy numbers 1 and 2 were misplaced, 1 wire was on 2 and 2 wire on 1, would that cause it, even though the man said my timing was rite.

if you're over on nox, assuming your engine is running at the correct temp, your cat is probably not operating at a high enough efficiency.
i just had my emissions tested on sat. and my nox output was double the allowable limit. i decided to go ahead and pay for the diagnostic to make sure my egr wasn't bad, and the only thing wrong was my cat (showing no temp. differential)
i'm waiting on the replacement to come in so i can get it retested.

cool, I guess that's what I got to do. I guess it was kind of dumb of me to change all that, and not the cat huh

that sounds kinda weird i'd take it to another mechanic if a car is running properly at stoichiometry (ideal air/fuel mixture) it should pass smog without a cat the only reason why cars have cats is because they don't always run at stoichiometry like at full throttle, excessive loads, extreme atmospheric conditions, etc none of which smog stations check
bottom line if you replace your cat it wont fix your car you'll just be masking the problem the mechanic that said that your cat was bad can actually get in trouble for that
if you have any more questions just ask i'll be monitoring this forum now i'm interested to see what happens

yea cool, I haven't gotten a clear answer yet s to my messed up spark plug wires could've caused it my wire from cylinder number 1 was going to dizzy number 2 and wire 2 to dizzy number 1. I had some liquid at my tailpipe, I think it could of been gas because I fixed it and there's no more liquid their, also, maybe I should of ran it fo more than 15 miles before getting tested, on the freeway maybe. I get to retest once a week has passed, I'm gonna try to kill all the gas in my tank before I go back

exactly, he sais I had to many of those, it's the only one I failed at both speeds. I fixed it and now my car runs hella better, iono if it's psychological.

well it should be running better you where basically running on two of your four cylinders i'm shocked the thing ran
the nox is kind a weird thought nox is created when combustion temps exceed 2500 degrees and if you had the spark plug wires mixed the nox should actually come down because the raw fuel would cool down the cylinders hmmmmm
well i'd go back and test it now that you got the wires back in order do u have free retests until you pass

WERD.
My 88 Si failed on the NO portion of the test miserably. I replaced the CAT and my readings were so low they almost didn't register. Although I only failed on NO, the HC, CO, and NO all went way down. So for the $160 I spent on the CAT and the hour to make it fit perfectly, I second the above opinion that you will pass with flying colors with a new CAT.

Yup yup replace the cat. Listen I live in Cali too and have had enough smog test to last a lif time.LOL .Spend the money and get a new cat put on take it back for the smog n sit back and relax.LOL. It will pass. Your old cat is probobly all plugged up and not working anymore.Thats the first think I replace on an older car.Good luck....
