i have a b20 vtec and i am having a weird noise that i am almost 100 percent sure is the transmission. at low rpms i have a weird mettalic sounding rattle.. its driving me nuts..i just had a exhaust instaled and the guy who did the exhasut found a little rattling noise in the exhaust. i have a gsr transmission in a 92 si... the transmission shifts smooth so smooth its rediculous my moms 07 fit doesnt shift as smooth as this tranny, so i dont think it would be that,,,, please any help

 

I'm new here and I have the same problem, I can shift thru all the gears, but you hear a rattling sound when i'm driving. Did you get this fixed? My friend who's a mechanic said it sounds like the clutch, but it could go either way, he said that it shifts smooth thru each gear. Maybe it's a throw out bearing?

 

If it isn't your tranny you might have a broken baffle in your muffler, happened to a buddy of mine, you could only hear it under 1500 rpm.

 

i have done some extensive reading and think it may be the input shaft bearing which is a pain in the a@@ to replace so im gonna drive mine till it breaks or i g et the money to fix it...ill probobly just buy a used tranny and end up with the same problem.. my luck mine doesnt make the sound too much now but screw it.if you can rev your engine up without the clutch engaged and it rattles still its the throwout bearing..if the clutch is not engaged and it still makes the sound input shaft bearing

 

is there anyone else on the forum who is expieriencing this problem if so how long has this been a problem

 

ay man i have the same problem and its annoying as fu*k... sounds like a metallic noise or a bolt just hitting walls. it only happens when the engine is warm and im driving at about 2,000 to 3,500 rpm. also when i turn the ac on it will kind of almost bog the engine and start to rattle. did you get it fixed and is it similar to what im experiencing input is appreciated please....

 

Does the sound go away if you remove the A/C belt?

Have you checked for a loose or broken exhaust heat shield?

 

thanks man for responding im going crazy lol... so i took the ac belt off and it still makes that noise. its not the exhaust cause i disconnected the cat from the headers and its still there... i did a clutch and flywheel swap along with the throw out bearing and i started to notice it. it does it in low gear when the car is warmed up and i accelerate. and when i turn the ac on it kinda bogs and rattles. its a b16 motor with trans.

 

did you replace the pilot bearing in the flywheel? does the noise go away when the clutch pedal is pressed or released? can you hear the noise up til 3rd gear, maybe even up til 4th?

 

Might want to check the rear motor mount (near the firewall). Just a suggestion.

 

the only bearing i replaced is the throwout. and where will the pilot bearing be? when its cold and i drive there is no noise but when it warms up and i drive in low gears 2nd 3rd 4th 5th i hear the metal noise. but if i press the clutch while the noise is there it goes away. do i make sense? ill check the mount.

 

This fits with a bad input shaft bearing. Start shopping for a replacement transmission.

 

you think so? do u have any idea how much it costs to rebuild it. you get the gist of it tho right? cause it only does it when its warm and it gets louder at a higher rpm. sounds live a bolt being thrown around.

 

Usually, if you push the clutch down and the noise goes away, the transmission input shaft bearing is a prime suspect.

well i checked the mount and it looks pretty bad but i highly doubt thats the noise. damn so ronj you say i should buy a new trans or can i fix the bearing? and do u know where it will be on the b16 trans?

 

If any exhaust heat shields are still installed, remove them to see whether the noise goes away. If not, I think the input shaft bearing may be bad. It's not an easy task to replace this bearing, so many simply replace the transmission. My understanding is that you may be able to buy a used thransmission for a few hundred dollars. Hopefully other members will give you more guidance.

 

damn, and i dont know if this may be a helpful sign but it also kinda shakes ridiculous sometimes when im driving off in first my friend says i need to give it gas more but idk if its cause i need a new tranny what u think? thanks for ur time RonJ...

 

Well, it's also possible that you need to learn how better to ease the clutch pedal in. Is your friend able to accelerate in first gear without causing the clutch chatter and the noise?

 

well he has a gsr and his never does that only sometimes my 16 will.. just curious. i need a new tranny **** lol... owell... thanks bro

 

Tip 4 u.
If your trans whistles with the clutch DISENGAGED it will be your input shaft bearings... it will sound like chattering, whistling. grab a 2x4 piece of wood place it on top of ur trans and put your ear up to it.

If it is chattering or whistling with the clutch to the floor, ~ throwout bearings.

True, but to the OP, you only replaced the throwout bearing? It may be the pilot bearing. Its inside the flywheel bore.

 

okay so i put the distributor back to the middle and i noticed if i advanced it all the way the noise would get louder. the noise sounds like its from the tranny / head. it still sounds like a bolt is hitting metal but its not as loud. does it have anything to do with the timing?

 

Keep in mind that there is an internal and external input bearing, as I have replaced both. does this sound occur when you push in the peda, neutral, or in gear. Check those or I may have missed the check and you can go from there.

 

okay when the car is cold and i drive there is no sound what so ever. after it warms up and im driving and i kinda floor it, it rattles like a loose bolt around the head or tranny. i adjusted the distributor to the middle and the noise became less noticeable. it happens in gears not in neutral. =-(
