What shocks should I get?
I'm running stock shocks on Neuspeed Sport Springs so it may be time to upgrade. Someone suggested KYB GR-2s because they are cheap and do the job. So I may go with them. I just have one question is how does the whole shock spring thing work? I see in the picture...

They don't really look like my stock ones, or do they? Or is that a generic picture and the actual ones for my car will look like the old one.
What is the difference between a shock and strut. I was under the impression the shock went inside the strut or something.
If someone could explain all this it would help a lot.
Also what would I need to install these myself?

Hey, I got the KYB GR2 with eibach sportline for over 2 years and they still ride very nice... The pic that you posted are shock ones.. This is the strut pic:
So Shocks and Struts are 2 completely different things? Thats probably why I never saw something like that on my car. And what are those belts around your Struts? Something for packaging or is it always there?
Yup they are compeltey different thing noticed that shock doesn't have the sit dish that holds spring where as the strut have it .. When they ship the strut or shock they will put the plastic round thingy to prevent from stretching so it will fit inside the box..

Oh I see.
So do our cars only have Struts or can you get either. Cuz I see sites saying they have both or are these sites just stupid?

Ok thanks. I'll check up on it.
What did it take to install? Do I need to get a spring compressor? Could you give me a basic run down of what to do I would really appreciate it.

Wrong, shocks are used on Hondas, those units that have the bands around them are struts. I can't remember the difference between the two right now but there is a definate difference.
I had a personal mechanic do it for me, since I dont have the right tools.. You need a spring comressor( a must), impact wrench(optional), 2 ton jack and safety stands, etc.. Here is the link with might help you out.. Hope this helps..

The first pic are"Shock absorbers" are physically separated from the car's springs. A "strut," on the other hand, is a shock absorber with a spring that fits around it.. I think this much better explanation..
Dude, you don't even need a spring compressor. Do you have a lawn and a friend? Good. Now have your friend stand on the spring/shock combo (on it's side) while you unbolt the nut from the top. Sproing! There it goes, just watch where the nut flies and you're set.
And you won't need a spring compressor for this job at all, because you already have the shortened springs on the car. You won't need to compress them to put them back together either.
But if you were putting stock-length springs back on your car, you would need the compressor to get them back together.

Seriously, though...I got one of those goofy-*** spring compressors at Auto-Zone for a loaner, like $30 deposit...tried to figure out how the f*** it worked for like 1/2 an hour...maybe I'm retarded but I just called my GF outta my room and said, "Bitch! Stand on that spring!" So she did, and I busted the nut right off
As far as safety goes, I don't think what I did was dangerous at all...but yeah if you really wanna be careful, get a spring compressor. But just letting you know that it's not nearly as necessary as a lot of people say it is.

in the picture, the pair of shocks on the left of that pic look like rears for some honda. but the pairs right are mcpherson strut. and i believe that the RSX use mcpherson strut so i believe that set is for the RSX
i installed a set of GR2's with ground control coil overs onto a friend of mines 00 corolla. droped with about 2" fender gap. the ride is NICE

I only used a spring compressor for my front shocks.. my rears didn't need it.
I bought the tokico blues with neuspeed sports and I'm lovin' it.
When I put the new shock/spring combo back together they actually had some play (rears) and the fronts didn't need much compressing. rears when right together and the front I had to push the cap down while my dad used air tools to tighten the top bolt... much easier than fiddling with those damn autozone spring compressors..
stock springs arent even in there with enough compression to cause harm if done right. Let out the sohck in the car by unbolting the top bolt and the top two then place jack under it at bottom and lower it slowly

I swapped my stock springs for suspension techniques springs and did it without a compressor. the stock springs are only under 1" of compression, I drilled a hole in a 2x4 and made a primitive compressor using that and a hand truck as a leverage point, and an air impact wrench to take the nut off without any help. Two average guys could do it with no tools one could press down while the other tackled the nut. You need nothing to put new lowering spings on the new struts. If you have lowering springs on it now you need nothing. unlike a lot of struts these have a very low preload on the springs. and can be done safely without a compressor. If you use just a little caution.
