Cricket-like sound from the engine at idle
Thanks to all your help and patience, my baby is running again after replacing the timing belt, water pump, coolant, drive belts, valve cover gasket and spark plugs. This is the first time I have ever done anything beyond checking the oil and coolant on any car. Thanks everyone!
Here's another question...
There's sound like.....crickets or something like that. It comes n goes and I only notice it when I am outside the car. Does anyone know what may be causing this sound based on all the work I recently did above? Thanks guys n gals.

Is it coming from the distributor area? Usually worn out bearings, or something misaligned/rubbing can cause that

did you replace the tensioner? I'd say check it for noise (it should spin pretty smooth, and not like an old skate) and then if its good just re-tighten your t-belt. There is a specific way to do it.

actuallly, now that I think about it, my car only started doing that after I did a tuneup. Sort of like what you described, I replaced the pcv, on acceleration is when the pcv makes that sound. how does it run? maybe it's the pcv doing it's job; which is to recirculate intake to the throttle body, gl, hope you find out what it was

No, I didn't. Should I and where can I get it? How do you apply the belt dressing?

tensioner as in timing belt tensioner? No, I did not replaced it, but the tensioner bolt came off and had to re-install it. Come to think of it, the tensioner would probably make this noise if you hit it...like you're ringing a bell.
Re-tightening the timing belt as in set the #1 piston to TDC, turn cam 3 teeth, loosen the tensioner bolt, re-tighten the tensioner bolt?

It runs pretty good other than the cricket-like noise which comes on n off.

My mechanic told me that's what a new pcv sounds like, there's a ball in their that jumps around for air circulation, under certain force from the intake. maybe that sound is normal

It couldn't hurt. Just start the car and spray it on the belts. after changin the belts off my other cars I've always spayed it on. just a habit my dad got me in to. might work, might not, but it's worth a shot. It's only a few buck at autozone, kragens or some parts store. hope ya figure it out. good luck.

check your transmission release bearing...
My 92 type R hybrid does that. Sounds like a cricket which idling, driving.... if you lightly touch the clutch pedal then it goes away...

Check the altenator belt, it may be too tight or too loose. It should have some play but not ALOT and dont over tightin it, or it will cause it to squeek like a cricket as you say. QUESTION?? Does it go away after being ran for a little bit or reved up, and does it mainly squeek when you first start it up If so then its your Alt. Belt

At first start up, the crickets are probably still asleep or preparing their singing intruments to sing, u know, warming up or something. Actually, the crickets don't have a schedule as to when they sing or keep in their little cricketty quietness.

i just noticed this exact same noise on my em1! and also just replaced water pump all serp belts timing belt and tensioner, had valves adjusted and all new gaskets. along with this i had the tranny inspected and a new clutch, flywheel, pilot and throwout bearing installed(so the tranny idea can be thrown out). I know how you feel. i am starting to wondering if the noise has been there since day one...its driving me nuts as im sure it is to you. i for sure thought it was the new belts, but i only hear the noise when i put my head near the distributor/intake manifold. and the crikets almost fall insync(or rythm) with the ticking of the valves. also i noticed that it will start at 1000 rpms go till about 3000 rpms...as i gradually give it gas. we need to get this figured out
(i think the pcv valve and it be normal seems like the most logical idea so far). i can hear mine with the windows down and driving at about 2500 rpms going slow enough with no wind noise also.

The only suggestion from this post that I haven't done is checking the tensioner and adjusting the timing belt. I'll probably try it this weekend when I have time to put me baby on jackstands. I know for sure this sound did not exist from day one, being that I bought me baby brand new Nov '91 and even before I changed the timing belt. Anywho, good luck with your crickettie friends. Hope they will all become sweet silence.
yes i dont think mine has been there since day one either. i only have 300 hundred miles on the new parts...and since then, have noticed this noise. i doubt its the tensioner...as ive just replaced this with the timing belt. not saying its not youre problem. but after trying to pinpoint my crickets living quarters, they seem to be in the pcv valve. you might want to check this out, unless youve already replaced this.?

Do you think I should have replaced the tensioner as well? I just noticed on an old receipt that the tensioner was replaced when the timing belt was first replaced back in 1998.
