Default Transmission Replacement Help

Well this is my first post so here goes. My younger brother has a 1994 Honda Civic DX with an automatic transmission. The transmission is blown and I am going to give him a hand replacing it. At the moment I haven't had time to tear into it so I located the ID Tag on top of the transmission that shows A24A for the first 4-digits. I also wrote down the following VIN and decoded it:
2HGEJ2222RH

2 – ORGIN = Canada
H – MANUFACTURE = Honda
G – TYPE = Passenger Car
EJ2 – CAR LINE/ENGINE = Civic 2-Door/1.5L
2 – TYPE/TRANSMISSION = 2-Door Coupe/Automatic
2 – GRADE = Civic DX 2-Door
2 – DIGIT CHECK NUMBER
R – MODEL YEAR = 1994
H – PLANT = Alliston Canada

Ok my guestion is are there other transmissions that are direct replacements other then the A24A? It seems the M24 is pretty common on ebay and such but not the A24A. The other option is possibly rebuilding the blown transmission which I've never done. I have knowledge of American transmissions like Chevrolet and Mopar and also Volkswagen but I have never done a Honda. I know my brother doesn't have a lot of cash and this car is a daily driver not a racer of any sorts so if I can score one of these transmissions online with 30,000 or so miles on it that would be great. I just need to know what my replacement/rebuild options are and any suggestions. Thanks In Advance
