Default New 99 Civic owner - D16Y8 knocks, can I replace it with a D16Y7 from 2000?

Hello, I'm a new civic ex owner, the ex wife had several civics/acords and my involvement was basically oil changes and riding shotgun.

With the gas prices getting crazy I picked up a 99 Civic 4d EX from a local that has a bad engine (runs but knocks and rattles), the car is a 5spd (paid $250 for it), anyway my question is...

It has a D16Y8 engine w/ 142K miles and yes he ran the hell out of it (his words not mine). A buddy at a salvage yard just got in a 2000 DX 4d Auto and has made me a sweet deal on the engine (78K w/ dealer oil change receipts in the glove box) If I recall correctly the 2000 engine is D16Y7 and is complete.

Can I install this into my 99 w/ no problems? I am not interested in performance or speed, strictly economy and hoping to get what I was told was around 38 mph on the highway (I drive 80 miles round trip a day).

I plan to reuse my exhaust and intake as well as accessories. I plan to use only the donor long block. My 99 has the VTEC which I could care less about and I really don't know that much about it. Can I use that D16Y7 set up with my ECU and harness. I know I'll need to swap the flywheel for the flexplate and a new clutch.

Any thoughts? And is it better to remove the engine w/o the trans (5sp) or all together?

Yes I'm a newbie, but it this was a 5L Mustang I'd be the one answering everyones' questions.

thanks!

ECU will need a change to avoid CEL (it'll otherwise work) just due to the y7 not having VTEC. Things will bolt easily, they're same block with different head.
Pretty much only difference is that a y7 is typically paired with a longer-geared transmission for economy purposes, which will help even more, whereas y8 is short for acceleration.

Best of luck.
