Whats going on members, im sure this has been covered but i cannot seem it locate anything in the search area, i have a 94 Integra LS, with Crane stage 2 cams, 4-1 header, oversize TB, now with the milage that is on my motor not sure exact milage but its 160,xxx ish, compression is great, right now i run an OEM Honda Oil filter, and Mobil 1 5W30 Motor oil, it dosent burn or leak any oil, would the suggestion be to switch to a 10W30 or should i stay at 5W30 ??

I don't know, but my gsr has close to 200k and it was smoking at very high rpm. That changed when I switched to 10w-40.

so stick with 5W30

 

i have 262k in my daily and i use castrol 10w40 drive hard and have no problems and for my other dc it got almost 300k and i use castrol synthetic 10w40 and still have no problems or smoke. hope it helps

I meant it smoked when I was using 5W30. It stopped when I switched over to 10w30

Thanks and that has helped... i will stay with 5w30 for this oil change and then change it up to a 10W30 Synthetic !!!

 

Ive got a 1994 Ls also but we use 20w50 in it I dont know why the previous owner ran it but I guess beacuse of the engin mods done to it

 

just remember once u go synthetic you cant go back to red oil

It's true about once you use synthetic you can't go back. If you do then the chemicals that help seal your engine better would get worn out and eventually will make your engine leak. You can change your motor oil at 5,000-6,000 miles or you can go more. At 3,000 miles you just need to change your oil filter and just add a quart of oil.

are you sure? i have switched back and forth on my stock EK and never had any problem .. car runs fine, burns almost same amount of oil on synthetic or non-synt (during oil changes, just only a bit)

 

oh word ight my bad i aint know that but i love synthetic and im over 300k with no problems

There is absolutely no truth to the "once you go synthetic, you can't go back" theory. It's 2014. How do people still believe that?

Also...if OP is having good luck with his current oil/filter combo....why change it all of a sudden?

10W30 is not thicker at operating temp than 5W30. It's only thicker at start up and under operating temp.

Yay someone else who understands how oil works lmfao.

Big plus side to synthetics is they have very kittle viscosity modifiers so as the additives break down their operating temp viscosity stays about the same.

Conventional starts out as the lower rating, and the modifiers thicken it while at operating temp. As the additives break down the oil begins to thin out

5w30 turns to almost straight 5 weight

Synthetic 5w30 remains 30 weight at operating, but doesnt thin to 5 weight when cold like it originally did.

Thats part of the reason why synthetics last longer
