Default valve clearance question

I am putting my engine together now. i have a kid on the way so money is short. I would like to one day put in some cams in my engine. so can i clay the factory valves. then see what the clearance is so i can one day down the road put in some cams. looks like if i have 2mm clearance i can put in a cam that has 1mm more lift.
