Default 1997 Acura Integra Clutch Problems

Hey all, I need some advice on my clutch.

My brother recently gave me his Integra because he was going away but the clutch seems bad. Everytime I push down the clutch to shift I hear a screech noise. No grinding just some what a screech noise. It happens when Im driving as well as when the car is just sitting there in Nuetral. It gives a very minor struggle when its going into gear as well. I was told that the clutch fluid is bad and it needs to be bled but I have no clue on doing that.

I just took it to the Mechanic and he recommended to change the whole clutch. But its gonna cost upwards to 600+ and i wasn't sure if that included labor. He seemed shady though.

I want to try to bleed the clutch myself as I was told its a simple procedure. Anyone know of a step by step link or something? Thanks in advance.

You could try bleeding the clutch to see if it will make shifting easier but it sounds like your screeching sound is from a bad throwout bearing.

Check the clutch fluid reservoir. Bleed the clutch.

To take care of the noise, grease the shifter fork & the end of the pushrod in the slave cylinder. There is a rubber boot on the side of the trans that you can pull off to access it.

Thanks. I'm some what of a newbie when it comes to Acuras/Hondas.

I just don't want to spend all this money on a clutch when its possible it can be minor.

The mechanic didn't even take my car for a test drive. he just said the clutch is gone so I new something was fishy.

Ill give it a try later on.

The noise is likely caused by a bad throwout bearing

dont goto a mechanic all they wanna do is rip you off if u got a close friend or in general a friend that knows somewhat about cars go check it up with them the machanic just wants ur money. just try flushing the fluid and see how that goes. and while the car is off push down the clutch and shift it around to see how it goes it might just be stiff especially if u havnt driven it in alittle bit hope that helps alittle

well, unfortunantly I don't have anyone close to me that works on cars.

A little update:

I ended up getting an oil change and the mechanic mentioned something about a bearing is what may be causing the screaching noise. He said that the bearing requires a lot of labor and you might as well replace the entire clutch.

One thing i noticed when I driving home though. I noticed that it is a PAIN in the *** when I'm downshifting. Also, if I'm coasting and I take it out of gear...its difficult to put it back in gear, whether its 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. What can that be attributed to? Is my clutch going out?

Well it sounds like you do need to replace your clutch. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself if you don't have tools and a garage to do the work in. I'd recommend getting a clutch here though:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1942642

Cheapest OEM kit I've found and fast, free shipping.

The throwout bearing is included in the kit.

For now, try shifting at lower RPMs and see if its easier (under 2k).

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing - shifting at lower rpms and shifting quick. When i do that, there are no problems at all. Not as smooth when I shift but its drivable.

BTW, I was offered $350 for the clutch job. Is that about right or should I continue to look around?

So I just got a smog check (passed) and I asked the guy if he works on clutches. He said my clutch is good and that the noise can be from the tranny.

So now I'm a little confused, is it my tranny or the clutch?

To recap, these are the symptons:

-While in neutral and not moving, if I push down the clutch, I hear a minor noise

-I hear the most noise when I'm downshifting. At times, its difficult to downshift into gear and when Im having trouble getting it to gear, the screeching noise begins.

-Shifting from 1 to 2nd, and from 2nd to 3rd etc... is fine. I normally shift at a lower RPM but there is minor noise.

Thoughts?

I think one of your clutch springs popped out and that's what's making the noise. (it happened to me). That will be evident as soon as you take the tranny out and see metal bits in the bellhousing.

$350 is not a bad price to pay to have your clutch done. Does that include the parts?? If so, then that is really good.

If it's your tranny that is bad, its MUCH more expensive to fix. Start with the clutch.

350 is just for the labor. I'll have to provide the clutch kit which I found for $100. So it will all cost $450 to replace the clutch...if indeed the clutch is the problem.

I noticed that the majority of the noise is when I downshift or try to put the car back in gear. In which when I down shift its a pain to get the car in Gear. Going foward (from 1 to 2nd and so on) doesn't make as much noise if any at all and shifting isn't a problem. There isn't no slipping or grinding either.

Im gonna take it back to that mechanic and try to find what the problem is for sure. I hate getting the run around.

My check engine light just came on! Grrrrrrrrr

I wonder what it could be. I just got a smog check and it passed.

Disconnect your negative battery cable for a few seconds and then hook it back up. That will reset your CEL. If it comes back on, get it checked.

Just got back from the transmission mechanic down the street from my work and he said he's 99% sure its not the tranny. He said its should be a clutch problem and the noise most likely stems from the throw out bearing.

He said, if anything, I should get the tranny fluid changed and to keep the fluid to make sure there isn't any metal pieces or any other debres. But he's almost certain its the clutch.

To get the clutch replaced is an estimeated $370. Basically its $250 (labor) + $120 (Clutch Kit).

So I ordered the clutch last week and I'm praying it gets in today. I called the mechanic and he said I can drop it off tomorrow morning and have it done by the afternoon. Seems like my problem is getting worse as its more difficult to drive. I'm praying its my clutch and not the tranny.

And I'm starting to smell like a burning fluid smell which may stem for the clutch as well.

Well when dropping the tranny you have to remove the axel's, and when removing the axels the fluid will come out of the tranny where the axels were so you'd have to change the fluid anyway

as for the price it sounds like a great deal to me.. I had a 96 Geo Prizm that I had a clutch done on and I was charged a raping $700 parts and labor

what kind of clutch kit did you get?

I'm doing my GSR myself

I got an Exedy Oem clutch kit. Came out to $110. Labor is like $260.

Word. I just installed that exact clutch over Memorial Day weekend, along with a new friction surface for my Clutchmasters flywheel (freaking $104 for a flat, round piece of steel).

Still breaking it in but so far feels pretty good.

Was your clutch going out before you replaced it?

When you press your clutch pedal down about 1.5 inches a little bit past where you start to feel pressure you might hear a whine, that whine or grind is 100% coming from the throwout bearing. (Larger Round bearing thing in the bottom middle of that clutch picture.) it presses against the fins on the pressure plate. I had this problem on my 94 GSR.

Now when you have the clutch fully pressed in and put first in and SLOWLY take off the clutch if you hear a metallic grind or high frequency chatter your clutch disc is worn out and the rivets are tearing into the flywheel and pressure plate. Don't give the car any gas just idle into first gear.

If the engine is off and car is parked and you push the clutch pedal in and out and hear a squeak it is the Clutch Fork pivot ball. Simply re-grease it with a brush and heavy duty grease.

No need to ever drain or flush your clutch fluid. So what if its dark, the darkness is from the O-rings in the master and slave cylinder wearing out. When one of them finally goes THEN replace the fluid. otherwise your just wasting your time and adding more hydraulic fluid to the environment.
