barely failed smog...cheap and easy way to reduce NO's?
Just barely failed this morning. Anyone know any cheap and easy ways to reduce NO's? The car cost me $1500 and I'd rather not have to buy a new exhaust/ cat for a car I don't plan on keeping very long.
thanks,

clean out your throttle body with some brake/carb cleaner .. insid ehte intake amnfiodls prob all gunked up. next time you go . request a pre-test and be sure the cars warmed up and you've been drivin it for at least 5 min before you go
Isopropyl Alcohol. Add some to your gas. You can get it for like 69 cents at the drug store.
Or add fuel and retard timing.
NOx means your cylinder temps are too high.

Last year my car barely got through the smog check, so I had to take it a week ago and I was afraid of failing it. My cousin claimed that if you warm your car for some time and drive the **** out of it before taking it will help. I was like B.S. so I tried it like an idiot and I passed it with no problem. Sounds retarded but it doesnt hurt to try. Just dont take your car to be tested cold. Good Luck

Seafoam, it comes in a red and white can. If you read the instructions it's pretty self explanitory. You can run this stuff through an open vaccumm on your intake manifold so it will run into your cylinders. What it does is cleans all the carbon, gum and deposits in your motor. You can also run it in your tank to clean the injectors. It's great stuff. It will help pass emmissions and will not harm your motor. I can usually find it at Napa auto parts for about $5-6.
I've been using this stuff on my cars for years and it always brings back HP.

My car needs help. We have the I/M 240 test here in WI. I score a 50% on the test..passed 2 out of 4...passed the Nox and the Gas cap check. Here's the numbers, what do you think.
Reading Limit
HC 2.0057 0.8000
CO 21.6338 15.0000
NOX 1.2773 2.0000
Help! hehe

man gas cap cehck doesnt mean **** .. anyways .. your HC's are too high, pretty much double, that means you got some unburned gas, and most liekley youll have to get a new cat in california most modern cars need to get lower than 120-150 HC's to pass the test, i dont know how your test is but .. if soemoen gets aroudn 180-220. we suggest a new catalyc converter, in some cases its an o2 sensor but really depends on the situation and the mechanic needs to visually see whats high and whats low and whats out of range.
Like I had said in other posts in the past, when I got the car it was a stripped "R" racer. It had a different head, intake, exhaust. He stripped it all off before he had it for sale tho, I just happed to of found his ad he had in the car that he must of forgot in the spare tire well. The only thing bum on it is the upper ball joint and that I had to replace the ECU. I'm pretty much positive he didn't time the engine to well. I fully retarded the ignition at the distributor and still couldn't get out of ping when the car was hot. I ended up having to spin the cam gear 3 teeth before it got out of ping. So I'm sure I'm still fighting some timing problems. The other problem is when I pulled the plugs after the test (I didn't think to take a look at them before cause the car was running fine, pulling 30 mpg) and when I got them out they all had like a somewhat light brownish covering on them. As far as my knowledge goes, that's indicating a normal wear plug. But they were worn, so I replaced them. I'm gonna try and tweak the timing a little more and see what my next numbers are, hopefully better then the last ones. I'm pretty sure the timing is a little retarded so maybe that's why i'm blowing unburned fuel out the tailpipe.

Rubbing alcohol works just fine, granted you don't add it to an empty tank. I used 91 and 97% along with Berryman's "Guaranteed to pass" fuel additive and it significantly reduced my emissions. Don't overdo it, we have rubber fuel lines...
I'm running High HC at idle 456 when my max can only be 100... but only 36 at HC when the max is 130... And my CO checked out fine. I heard turning the fuel pressure down can help??? ANY Suggestions???
maybe try turning your timing down a few degrees. there is a range in which you can have the timing be and still pass visual. it makes one of the numbers go down, but not sure which one. i dont have my smog paperwork anymore to check.
What type of fuel where you running. I run only 92 in my B16, but it will run lower HCs if I run 87 just to pass......Higher octane fuels will generally run richer, especially if your ride isn't running top notch.

I run premium I think its 91 the car runs good. and clean everywhere expect idle where its got crazy HC level. I read somewhere about adjusting the fuel pressure down... Anyone tried that???
would running 87 make 360 point reduction in the HC emmissions???
I cant say if it will make that significant of a difference, only one way to find out. Do a routine tune up, clean the throttle body, check your o2 sensor (s), etc., and try the low grade for the test.

gonna give it a shot. have you heard about adjusting the fuel pressure regulator to reduce emissions?
