Default Just a poll (new engine vs. rebuild head)

Which is going to be easier rebuilding the head with at least 2 bent valves or replacing the entire engine?

Thanks, Rob

The easy thing would be to rebuild the head. As long as you are sure there is no damage to the pistons or block.

Another thing to look at is the condition of the block and how it was running before the valves where bent. How many miles on it. It may be worth your while to replace the motor if it is a high mileage oil burner.

You can always get a used engine. Get a Japanese used engine. There are lots of place that import honda engine from Japan. I got mine from Patterson, NJ for $650. The engine is still running good Thank God and there is no oil burning so far with 25k on it.

If you are going to go with the rebuilt option, you migh as well as go all out and rebuilt the engine replacing all the major components - head gasket, timing belt etc. depending on the mileage. You don't want to put a new trans after going through an engine rebuilt.

If you have a manual trans - you should consider replacing your clutch depending on the mileage and which option you go with.

Best of luck.

Its more work to replace an entire engine, but it might just as expensive to get a head rebuilt/work on at a shop.

It is a real pain in the butt to remove the head on that 83 Accord, and with ALL THOSE MILES on the engine you should rebuild the bottom end.
$650 for an 83 accord engine would be a great deal.

What caused the valves to be bent? You didnt break your timing belt, did you?

I didn't break the timing belt (not saying someone else did. I bought it this way), but I ran a compression test because it was running rough. 1=180, 2=170, 3=180, 4=0.

I looked inside the cylinder from the spark plug hole and everything looked fine, so that is the only thing I can think of.
