Default 96 civic ex VSS problem

hi,

i have a 96 civic ex.

long long ago, it shows a little bit fast, like when i drive at 65, it shows 70

about three month ago, the speed meter some times work, sometimes didnt.

then, it stop woking more and more times

a week ago, it became shaking, when I drive at 65m/h. it just keep jumping from 0 to 65 (some times it just stay at 0).

now, it stop working,

is there anybody can give me some advice?
is it the problem with the senser or the wire or the connection or maybe the meter under the dash board?

thanks a lot

here is a tip, take the vehicle speed sensor out, and ohm it with a meter. compare to spec, i dunno what ti is right now. but anyhoo, see what ti says, if it is ok, then while still ohming it with a meter, hit it with a blow dryer, the resistence will climb, see if it starts to climb really fast and then go to an open circuit. if so, you found the problem.

It's a very common problem with the EKs. The first thing you can do is take the plug off the VSS and make sure there aren't any pins missing on either side.

"if so, you found the problem."

u mean for this situation, the problem is the senser itself?

yes, sensors of the voltage generating type,[ such as a crnak position snesor] generally go open or high resistence when hot, and when you heat them with a heat gun or a blow dryer that is very hot, the resistence will climb, and if it starts to climb rapidly, or goes significantly higher than originally, then it is bad. if you still have questions, tell me what you measured, and what you measured while it was ghetting hot and what it got up to.
