Default rim size... quick help

hey guys im looking to buy some rims for my ride, a 95 coupe.. im debating if i should buy 16" or 15".. i know if i buy 16 i need to buy lower profile tires due to fender clearance, but also if i buy 15 i dont want it to look too small. since stock honda rims are 14" buying 15 would only be an inch bigger.. do you guys think that if i buy 16" i should be ok. because i'm concern about tire thickness as well as not crackin one of my rims on a pot hole.. NY & NJ roads are tough! any input will be greatly appreciated.
