Default question for a friend, involving an alternator on a 1985 civic

He's getting the battery light on the dash when the engine speed is below 4000 RPM, but it goes away above 4k. Can an alternator die in a way that it will provide a charge when spun fast enough, but not at lower speeds? Or should he be troubleshooting connections? Thanks in advance!
