question for a friend, involving an alternator on a 1985 civic
He's getting the battery light on the dash when the engine speed is below 4000 RPM, but it goes away above 4k. Can an alternator die in a way that it will provide a charge when spun fast enough, but not at lower speeds? Or should he be troubleshooting connections? Thanks in advance!
its the alternator. that happend on my 87 DX a while back. it is a warning. Replace it asap if it is daily driven.
Same thing happened on my '85 DX CRX...I was able to make the 1 hour drive home before my Optima battery died due to the alternator suddenly deciding that it was going to die. Replace the alternator ASAP...

They are 100% correct. On my 87 Civic hatchcrap, the car would die if RPMs went below a certain amount. So I upgraded the alternator and went with an Optima Yellow Top Ran like a champ every day after!!
