Mixing new and old tires??? OK to do?
94 LX F22B2 5 speed...
The steel belt in one of my my tires broke so I convinced wally world to replace it since it had 60% tread left on all 4 and had religiously maintained balance, pressure, rotation, etc.
Question is, will it harm the tranny to run slightly different size tires (due to wear, 6/32 vs. 10/32)
I believe that the wheels act independently of eachother and dont need to rotate at the same speed but wanted to make sure. is it that the power goes to the right wheel regularly, and then to the left if the right wheel loses traction?
All wisdom appreciated!

If I were going to do that, I would just put the new on the front since thats where you need the tread the most.

The manual transmission has a differential, as seen above. This means that differently worn tires as well as say, using the tiny spare tire on one axle will be perfectly fine, correct???
Does our particular differential usually apply the power to the left wheel or the right under normal driving?

Aha! We just have open differentials don't we... no fancy lsd like this
So, its no problem if wheels are different sizes, the diff just spins them at different speeds like if the car were turning...
I just wanted to know if it would hurt anything until I can get around to replacing all of them...
Never mind.

I am sure almost all non-car-enthusiast people run different tires all the time without hurting anything. The accord is a cheap reliable car now a days, so lots of people have them and abuse them and they still have hella long lifetimes.
Ya, believe me I would prefer all matching new tires... Just wanted to make sure it wouldn't screw something up before I can get to the shop in a couple days

if you can't run different size tires on either side without breaking the transmission, you can't go around turns without breaking it... think about it.
It won't hurt the tranny. Unless you've installed an LSD (it didn't come stock with one).
It'll make the car handle a little wierd, but maybe only a little bit. If you never have to maneuver quickly to avoid a collision, it probably won't matter.

I wouldn't really trust a tire sales shop that is trying to sell me tires to give me advice on tires. I would prefer a neutral party.

it still wouldn't hurt the tranny even if you had a limited slip diff. A fully locked diff is the only thing that would f it up. This is not a problem or else millions of cars on the road right now would not be driving.

Right, it all becomes clear when you see how it works. One tire with 4/32nds larger thread will be like going around a f*cking massive turn and will have no i'll effect.
to 02 accord: a fully locked diff is useful in say drag racing when turning is not a priority. Otherwise, the first tire to break traction will spin like crazy with practically no power going to the opposite wheel. Thats why if one tire is on ice, it will spin but the other wont until the spinning wheel gains traction.

Most LSDs generate heat as you go around a curve. They'll tolerate it as long as the curve doesn't last more than a minute or 2.
