Hey guys,
What are the differences between these 2 engines? Is it the pistons and head-gasket?
Thanks!

The B20Z has higher comp pistons, not sure what else is different. I think theres like a 5-10hp differnce btw the b20z and b20b.
It is the pistons.
b20b= 97-98 126hp @ 5400 rpm
133 ft-lbs (18.4 Kg-M) @ 4300
8.8:1 CR
b20z=99-00 146hp @ 6200 rpm
133 ft-lbs (18.4 Kg-M) @ 4500
9.6:1 CR

So it's only the pistons? What about a knock sensor?...I thought the Z had one.
yes the b20z has the knock. and the intake mani. are diff. giraffe style ls on b and more ls like with doomahicky chamber on z.

So if I were to get a USDM B20B with Z pistons and headgasket, it would be somewhat equivalent to the B20Z? Sorry for all these dumb questions, but the only B20 engines I can find locally are B20Bs....my goals are to build the b20 N/A non-vtec.

JDM b20b's are the same compression as the USDM b20z's.
anyways,
Devin, the way it looks is that there is 0.8 compression points difference between the B20Z and B20B, so not much really.
the Z also has a knock sensor - but WOW!
so,
the only REAL diference is the intake manifolds
ie the big ugly one on the B20B and hte smallish LS one on hte B20Z,
this is where differences in the Honda factory power figures come from.
once the intake is swapped, eg an LS one, both the engines are fairly similar in power output.
personally, i gave up wasting my time chasing a B20Z and got a JDM B20B (which has hte low compression p3f marked pistons BTW)
the differences in performance due to the CR is soooooo minimal that it will be inconsequental once you start modding hte engine...
i hope this helps,

man, they are sooooo not!

JDM B20B is 9.6:1. Which is what I have. The piston is more "flatter" and not curved like the USDM B20B.
97-98 its 9:1 and 99-00 its 9:6.
I checked it out on the honda manual. aka dealership version.

I have a 96 JDM B20b and this motor came with the LS looking manifold on it. Have you seen one of these before?
.8 pts is a huge difference.
ive seen a few B20Z and B20B dyno graphs and they look rather similar...
ie. not huge
