What to look for when purchasing a 88 - 91 Honda CRX
Unless you have a good amount of money to spend expect to work on it. Its always little inexpensive stuff most of the time.
Mainly rust on the quarter panels and under the car. Drive it. check fluids, check for leaks, check if all the doors line up, check the title to see if the vins match, look for a clean title, if not check for bondo. look under the carpet for frame dmg. stuff like that and just smell around to see if you can smell or see moldy ****

The one I looked at had rust on the quarters. The guy tried bondoing it over, but it looks ugly and needs to be done right. On the left side some of it extends into the bumper so I can easily pull the corner part out, but the rest of it looks alright. I looked at this car twice and checked the oil each time and it was full. I did not see any leaks under the car when it sat idling. The car was not lowered so I did not see any frame damage underneath. All the vins matched up (door, under the hood, and on dash). Surprisingly the body panels had what looked to be original pin striping and all the body panels lined up correctly. The car has an aem intake, new clutch, timing belt, water pump, alternator, stock si wheels and comes with some 17 motegi wheels that are a little scuffed on the right side, dc sports short throw shifter, and a cat back exhaust. The bad thing is the car has 204,000 miles on it, but the whole car drove nice and straight when i went down the road. Even when I let off the wheel it went straight surprisingly. The car didn't smell, but the windows have some track problems and also need help being aligned into there slot and the stripping on the drivers side window is a little messed up leaving a little gap in the corner where water can get through. Is that an easy fix? What you guys think? Thanks for the help so far!

IMO, only 2 things....

- has the car been in an accident....you want a straight car
I wouldn't worry about mechanical work. For the age of the original engine, many upgrade with a swap and other new parts anyway. Mechanical work is easy and can be done anytime

Well, I wanna make the car competitive in autox sts2 division, so i need the stock motor. Or i can just try and find another d16a6 with lower miles that has good compression. The car looks like it hasn't ever been in an accident and has what looks to be original pin striping. Here are some pictures of the rust on each side covered by ugly bondo!!! That would all get redone asap though.

There is a little sunroof rust thats bubbling, but not too bad. What you guys think? The third post up tells more about the car, but all for 2k. Think its a good deal with the rust? Thanks!

I dunno.. Are you good at doing body work? Mechanical work on these cars is usually a lot cheaper than doing (good) body work and paint, so keep that in mind.
I would keep looking, but I'm from the west coast, so its rare that you see rust like that. But it seems to be fairly common on the East coast so it might be hard to find a better example. But a straight car is important, so if that rust isn't too bad it might be worth picking up.

its hard to find a crx around me that isn't rusted. lol. I prolly would not be doing the body work, but I do not know yet. All depends on what they would charge me to do it correctly. From what I looked at that was the only major areas of rust. The rockers seemed fine as well as underneath. The guy wants 2 for it. What ya think?
