horrible sound
there is a horrible sound coming from my engine. it sounds like metal on metal rubbing. could it be power steering pump? or alternator belt? i dont know...any suggestions would help. I have a 92 LS.
<EDIT>
The noise is a rubbing sound. it sounds like metal on metal rubbing, like from a belt or something. it is on the drivers side. i took it to a shop and the noise went away. so right now the only idea i have is the ac compressor. but my ac works fine and the noise isnt there all the time. for the future What size belt would I have to get to just delete the ac system? is the compressor belt powering anything else like the alternator or the power steering?
thank in advance to all your responses and help

I have a similar noise, although i think it may be a bearing in one of the pulleys. I think mine is comming from the alternator? I can't really tell. I think it could also be the timing belt tensioner? Would either of these produce a bad noise?

Check the belt tension on you PS pump. If turning the wheel increases the noise, the PS pump is the most likely suspect. You can lift the hood and have a friend turn the wheel to diagnose the noise as well.

so i took it to a local car shop to have them listen to it..and the noise went away. the guys there said it might be the ac compressor. but since the noise went away im just gonna leave it. i dont even use the ac anyways.. but for future knowledge, if i take out the ac system, what kind of belt would i have to get to still power the other things that are with the compressor?

Take the belt off and see if it still does it.
Maybe I'm being stupid and didnt' see this info, but if i were you what I would do is edit your ORIGINAL POST to include where exactly in the engine bay the sound is coming from, when exactly it occurs and if you can re-create the sound with certain actions. Always update the original post to include new info so you dont' get the same recommendation 40 times in a row.
For instance, i, too had a a metal on metal sound but it was a rattling sound coming from my front drivers' side. I found out it was my dust shield on my

I also need to find out what else is powered by the belt going to the ac compressor, like my alternator or power steering, and what size belt i need to get if i decide to take the ac off..
