Default Removed head without setting engine to TDC: How to reset?

Well, let me first say, I'm a dumbass.

I am building a D16A6 with eagle rods, vitara pistons, etc, the usual. I have the block sitting on an engine stand waiting for the head to go on. Only problem is, when I pulled the head I am using off of the motor it was currently on, I didn't set it to TDC before taking the T-belt off.

Obviously I can line up the marks on the cam gears and line up the marks on the crank pulley and bolt it on, but aren't their rotational speeds different? Like the cam moves twice as fast as the crank pulley, right? So how do i know which rotation to set it on.

My only guess is to go by the valves. With the head off I can spin it around and see which valves are open and closed. When cylinder number one is at TDC, what are the other cylinders valves doing?

If anyone has insight as to how I should make sure the head is at the correct TDC then please enlighten me as it is going in tomorrow.

put the piston closes to the timing belt at the top of its stroke and the pulley should be lined up with a mark on the timing cover, slap on your head and put on the timing belt and double check your work

I don't think you understand the dilemma here. I know how to line up the timing marks and go. But, when I spin the cam around to the TDC mark, the valves are one way then when i spin them again to the same mark, they are a different way.

OK, so after some research my plan now is to spin the head around with a wrench on the pulley until it is lined up with the marks, then spin the block around until it is lined up with it's marks, then bolt the two together, slap the belt on and call it a day.

Sound good?

its not a hard concept of putting a head on a block and getting it timed correctly. set the crank mark on the block to 0 degrees, or TDC. turn the cam gear on your head to its TDC marks.. put the head on the block with the headgasket, and bolt it all together. make sure all the marks are lined up. i know the crank makes 2 revolutions per cam revolution, but thats irrelevant.

if you turn the cam gear to line the marks up, the valves are positioned one way. when you turn that same gear, and line the marks up again, the valves should be the same way they were before. if they're not, theres something wrong.

the easiest way ive found is that when your marks line up that the number one cylinder intake is closed ... I could be wrong since I am a toyota man but some one correct me if i a m wrong

I did not realize that until I actually chilled out and thought about it.

I also realize now that I was looking at the wrong dash, so on me again. I'm going to sleep now so that I can actually be competent tomorrow.
