Default engine revs over 9000 rpms in neutral when I start engine

I was on the freeway and decided to bring the car up a few rpms since I don't do it that often. I brought the car up to 8000 grand going onto the freeway. The car all of a sudden reved up over 9500rpms when I went to shift gears. In neutral, it would rev over 9500rpms. My tach was maxed out and my engine was reving like there was no tommorrow !! I shut down the car and coasted on to the freeway shoulder. Started up the car again and it revs over 9000 rpms. Popped up the hood, and noticed that my throttle body felt kinda spongy when I would rotate the t/b plate. Im thinking its the TPS sensor or the actual throttle body. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Thx guys.

Sounds like you have a major vacum leak. If you have a large enough area for air to get in, you can not control how high the car revs. Check to make sure the tb didnt come loose or any of the sensors or contol valves from under the throttle body or back of the intake manifold.

good place to start looking, but check your throttle cable too, and the return spring also...

I've seen this happen a couple of different ways. Here is what I would check:

1. Throttle body betterfly sticking open. Usually just needs cleaning unless return spring is broken or damaged, which sounds like what you describe.

2. Throttle body is stuck because of binding in the throttle cable. This is easy to spot since the gas pedal is usually held down when your foot is off of it.

3. Major vacuum leak. A big line like the brake booster hose blew off or similar.

what does your gas pedal feel like? normal or loose? stuck? that'll tell if it's the butterfly valve...

Well, I figured it out. This is going to be funny, but a costly one. Just like what Acura_I-RS says. My freakin pedal got stuck in the carpet also. That really sucks, but a costly learning experience. I checked everything in the engine bay, and everything seemed alright. I started my car and it idled like normal. So, after that, I changed my oil, oil filter, and altanator belt ( my belt got fried also because of the RPM's my engine was putting out ). Got in the car, started it up, and tried to place it on gear. Guess what ? Can't place it in gear Called up my mechanic at skunk2 ( Steve ), and he told me that I fried the clutch. Well, anyways, the clutch had more than 70K on it and it was time for a new one. Gonna put a ACT street clutch and a lighter flywheel. Its gonna cost me like $700. Goodthing I upgraded the valve train a month ago. Thanks for all the help everyone.

Now that is wack. Everyone with carpet should remove their aftermarket gas pedals before someone gets killed. Clutch and brake pedals are probably ok.
