Default Driving with an almost worn thrust bearing: Can it do any harm?

Hi,

Maybe a noobish question, But few people seem to be able to answer this one entirely:

Most technicians say it does not do any harm, apart from making noise. But recently, I've read that this could cause stress on the syncro's (because the clutch doesn't release 100% properly anymore). Early symptoms would consist of a notchier shift behaviour (it only release for let's say 95%), leading to grinding gears (= partial release). Eventually the clutch will not release anymore.

Well now, my thrust bearing is rather noisy in the morning, but once the car heats up, much of the noise has faded (why is this?). More importantly, how urgent should I get it fixed? Is has been making this noise for about a year now, I need some good advice

best regards,

jeroen

I would have to agree with you on that one. If the thrust bearing isn't performing at 100% then other parts will have to make up the extra work load so your clutch system functions properly, eventually leading to a failure of some kind. However, if you go to the trouble of changing that bearing then have a new clutch, flywheel and pilot bearing installed at the same time. You'll love the difference it'll make in daily driving and so will your engine

The crankshaft will wear prematurely and you'll have to replace the crankshaft.

yup. I have a destroyed crank at home to prove this.. it is far beyond repair.. One motor i've got had the thrust bearing so shot it actually fell out, wrapped itself around the balance shaft, locked the shaft, threw the balance belt, which caused the timing belt to go too...

GAME OVER
